Star Trek stuff

I find it very interesting how much of the Star Trek universe references late 19th Century and early to mid 20th Century for their art and culture.  Data and Georgi played as Sherlock Holmes and Watson, Captain Picard played the role of Sam Spade, and even Janeway played a Victorian tutor.

So, when are we gonna have a captain who references Metallica?  Or likes football or hockey or soccer?  Or a captain how is born in Canada, or even places like Pakistan, Nigeria, or Australia?  Or have a captain how isn’t just a woman, but a woman of colour?  Or maybe a hijabi wearing woman?

I can see it now, a hijabi wearing Muslim woman (because science and religion do not have to be entirely exclusive) with Palestinian ancestry, born in western Canada (maybe Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, or Moose Jaw).  She likes hockey and football and talks about when the Oilers had their Stanley Cup dynasty, or the Riders of the early 2000′s.  Her favourite music might be some Middle Eastern tastes that she remembered from growing up that her parents might have listened to and she’d have a fondness for alternative rock, going back to stuff like the Tragically Hip, Tom Cochrane and Red Rider, Lee Aaron, Great Big Sea, Spirits of the West and even leaning to some country rock/rock-a-billy stuff (if she lived in Western Canada, she’d have heard a lot of that) like Steve Earle, Marty Stuart, Travis Tritt, The Dixie Chicks, Reba McIntyre, and even Dolly Parton.

That should be the next commanding officer of the U.S.S. Enterprise.

OH!  And, when she has downtime, she goes to the holodeck to watch the Flames’ Stanley Cup run against the Habs in the late 80s.  Or the Oilers fourth Stanley Cup.  Or the Canada-Russia series of ‘72.  And she goes and invites members of her bridge crew to come along with her and gets them time period jerseys to wearing while they watch the game.  Or they go to watch the 2013 Grey Cup in Regina, wearing parkas and toques to keep from getting cold.  Or they watch the 1989 Grey Cup from Skydome.

Oh!  More ideas!

The captain’s favourite thing when going to the holodeck is to wear a hijab of the team she’s cheering for (one for Riders, one for Oilers, one for Jets, one for Team Canada), and then inviting her Vulcan science officer to come along and watch.

Captain: It’s called a watermelon helmet.  You wear it.

Vulcan science officer:  It is highly illogical to wear food as a hat.

Captain: Oh come on!  It’s fun.

Vulcan science officer: Fun is an emotion.

Captain:  No it’s not.  Fun is an activity which you take part in.  The aspect of fun is if you gain pleasure and accomplishment from said activity.

Vulcan science officer: And you are not wearing this… watermelon helmet because…?

Captain: Because it’ll ruin my hijab.

OMG yes!  She takes her first officer, chief medical officer, chief engineer and even the Vulcan science officer to watch a few games, and then they form a rink.  “It’s like chess on ice.”
