True Blood Series Finale - My Thoughts
The hit HBO series ‘True Blood’ has come to an end with the final episode airing last night. I’ve been feeling a bit conflicted with this finale - while True Blood is one of my favourite shows, I have found season 7 to be really hit and miss.
So I have literally just finished watching the episode and I am feeling quite sad. I hate it when one of my favourite TV shows ends. Yes, I haven’t enjoyed season 7 all that much but I hate letting shows go.
The main focus of the finale was of course the relationship between Sookie and Bill, with Bill still refusing the cure for Hep-V. Bill, being the selfish bastard he is, asked Sookie to use her fairy light to kill him and make her human. I know he said this was so she could have a normal life but asking her to give up her powers was for him to avoid dying in pain. I saw right through his request and I’m glad Sookie eventually did as well, even if it was at the last minute. I am surprised that the writers chose to kill him off, I was expecting a Bill/Sookie reunion so I like that they deviated away from what was expected to happen. Sookie staking Bill was a touching moment. The two characters have been through a lot throughout the 7 seasons so as this moment happened, I was having flashbacks to all their moments over the past 7 seasons. It was a touching moment and brave of Sookie to kill someone she loved so much. I did really feel for her and it sort of redeemed her after being quite annoying this season.
The Jessica/Hoyt Wedding was also a nice twist which I didn’t see coming. It was a really lovely moment and Jessica looked beautiful. It was also nice to have a moment with Arlene, Holly and Andy who I really like. I’m glad Holly and Andy stayed together, they are a perfect match. The Wedding scene was really lovely, even if I think Jessica and Jason were better suited. But I can’t really complain because I love Hoyt and delighted to see him back.
The highlight of this entire season has been the Eric/Pam scenes and they were the highlight of the finale too. Their 'New Blood’ advert was pretty funny and I am now praying for a Eric and Pam spin-off series. Please make it happen HBO.
As for everyone else, it kind of felt like the writers forgot about them. We haven’t seen Willa for a few episodes, what exactly happened to her? We saw her at the very end but we didn’t get any insight into her life. Poor Lafayette was thrown to the side once again this season. After the Tara storyline was tied up, he was just gone. I guess I can’t really complain since he isn’t a big part of the books but still.
The flash forward was a nice way to end the series and to see everyone looking so happy. I was glad to see Sam come back, just a shame he is still with that idiot Nicole. It still bothers me that Luna died only for him to be banging Nicole the following day. I really liked that Jason ended up with Brigette. I felt it was a little odd to bring a new character in right at the very last minute but she was likeable enough for me to warm to her in the short space of time she had to engage with the audience. I’m a little torn about them keeping Sookie’s husband a secret. I kind of like that we didn’t see who he was but at the same time, I think I would have liked to have seen it. I’m just glad Sookie had a happy ending. I liked that Eric and Pam ended up back at Fangtasia with Sarah Newlin chained in the basement. It felt like they had gone full circle.
I am feeling quite sad that True Blood is now over. Despite it’s many flaws this season, it still is one of my favourite shows and I do feel the show ended the right way. I know many people are unhappy with the ending but you can’t please everyone. Season 7 certainly had it’s flaws but True Blood really is one of the best TV shows ever made.
Thank you for the memories.
