A few weeks ago I participated in a workshop through scbwi with Lauren Rille from Simon & Schuster. She had us do a number of fun exercises, including one where we sketched an animal of our own choosing of an age and in a location of our neighbor’s choosing. The woman sitting next to me chose a 2 year old in a kitchen. An octopus seemed like the obvious choice because it always seems like my toddler has a million arms when he’s “helping” me cook in the kitchen. I thought this was a great exercise to get us to stretch what we would normally draw a bit and a fun way to flex that creative problem solving muscle. You could do it at home this way:
1. Write down a bunch of animals
2. Ages
3. Locations
Hit the randomize button. Draw.
