Review: Math the Band / ‘GET REAL’

Math the Band / GET REAL / Anchor Brain

For a band with only two members, Math the Band have the collective energy of a hundred first graders on Halloween. So much energy. SO. MUCH. How Red Bull hasn’t approached them to be official spokespeople already is mind-boggling. [Red Bull execs: If you are reading this, hire these two. Also, why does your beverage make my left eye twitch after just one case?]

The Providence, RI band is a male-female two piece and to make things even more adorable, they are dating. Their new album, GET REAL, is the musical equivalent of a 40-minute long battle on the boss level of an 8-bit video game. If robots tried to replicate human music, or if humans tried to replicate robot music, the result would be GET REAL.

At times, Math the Band’s lyrics sound so scattered and non-sequitur that you get the feeling you’re overhearing a couple’s inside jokes, which is very likely what’s happening. Either that, or lyrics like “Everything counts if you know how to count it, I’m shaving a hat and pretending I planned it” are supposed to make sense to normal human people, because seriously, WHAT? But other times, the lyrics are a party and we’re all invited, like when they’re shouting, “We’re having a party everyday. Teenage rock and roll USA!”

Ultimately, this is more than GET REAL needs to be analyzed. It comes down to this: This is a fun album, the kind the phrase “dance like no one’s watching” was invented for.

Oh yeah, and their videos have an amazing Tim and Eric-esque quality to them.
