The Portland Art Museum’s Frank Stella travels to
New York City
Frank Stella’s wall sculpture Eskimo Curlew (1976), which has been part of the Portland Art Museum’s
permanent collection since 1979, has gone on the road!
The Whitney
Museum of American Art in New York City is currently hosting a career
retrospective of Frank Stella (b. 1936), one of the most important
living American artists. Frank Stella: A Retrospective is on view October 20, 2015 through February 7, 2016.
Eskimo Curlew is on loan to the most comprehensive presentation of Frank Stella’s
career to date, showcasing his prolific output from the mid-1950s to
the present. Co-organized by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the
Whitney, this exhibition will feature Stella’s best-known
works alongside rarely seen examples drawn from collections around the
world, including the Portland Art Museum. Accompanied by a scholarly
publication, the exhibition fills the Whitney’s entire fifth floor, an
18,000-square-foot gallery that is the Museum’s largest space for temporary exhibitions.
While the Portland Art Museum’s
wall sculpture is on loan to the Whitney, Frank Stella will still be
represented in the museum galleries through a generous loan from Dane
Nelson of Stella’s Newell’s Hawaiian Shearwater (Exotic Bird), which is from the same year and series as the museum’s
own artwork. Be sure to stop by the second floor of the Jubitz Center
for Modern and Contemporary Art to see the latest Frank Stella to be
exhibited at the Portland Art Museum.
