A Monorail trip around EPCOT Center in 1989. A couple things:
- I wish I could get ahold of that Jack Wagner narration for my EPCOT Center iTunes playlist.
- Horizons, right where it belongs.
But the biggest, most eye-opening thing for me is the huge crowds. Look at all those people swarming around the Imagination pavilion! These days the only time it’s that busy is on Christmas or New Years Eve, and even then it’s only because the lines are artificially lengthened by the FastPass+ system.
So why is that? Why was Imagination positively swarming with people back in 1989? Come here and I’ll tell you. Lean in real close.

Okay, here goes:
IT! DIDN’T! STINK!
It didn’t! It was full of cool, whimsical, exciting things to see and do! The ride was a classic, the upstairs ImageWorks was a blast-even if the technology wasn’t the absolute cutting-edge anymore it was still fun and everyone loved it-and Captain EO was still almost brand-new.
If you had told my 11-year-old self back in 1989 that Disney would basically just leave, not just the Imagination pavilion but the entire park, to rot I wouldn’t have believed you! If you had told me that in the 14th year of the 21st century EPCOT’s most popular attraction was a character meet-and-greet, I would have accused you of taking massive amounts of those drugs that Nancy Reagan was always imploring kids like me to say no to.
I’m sorry for ranting about this (again) but I can’t help myself! The utter brain-dead cluelessness of Disney’s executive leadership and the contempt for their customers that the current condition of EPCOT betrays just staggers me.
How anyone can keep going to that park and think they’re having a good time, that it’s worth their money, is beyond me.
