“The Troubles were with you all the time. You felt them in your tummy 24 hours a day. I was a Catholic boy but I wanted people to be able to go to my fights and not feel any threat, just come together. I was in an out of conflict areas, amongst tricolours, Union flags, murals… the Shankill Working Men’s club, Gerry Storey’s club in the New Lodge. My father sang Danny Boy before my title fights because it was a song that belonged to everyone. Cynics said it was a commercial decision but that was a load of bollocks. I think we had an incredible effect.”
