Zambia: Chilambwe storms squash quarter finals
CECILIA ZULU, KASAMBA MOONGA, Lusaka
DEFENDING champion Manda Chilambwe has cruised to the quarter finals of the ongoing Zambia States Insurance Corporation (ZSIC) General Insurance Midlands Open Squash Championship at Lusaka Club. Manda, who is seed one, beat Elvis Ngosa in the second round via a (11-6, 11-7, 9-11) score line to ensure he stayed on course for the K4, 000 first prize money.
He will today face seed eight Mitchell Mwanza who beat Nonde Kamuchele (10-12, 11-5, 11-9, 11-7).
Others who sailed through to the quarter finals are Chris Mulubwa who will meet Ngosa Musonda while seed two Frank Wabo will face Nomicius Mwewa with Kundanji Kalengo playing Alfred Muma.
Women defending champion Sharon Chimfwembe and seed two Monica Chimese have been put on bye and they will join the tournament today.
Meanwhile, National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) board chairperson Mwamba Kalenga has commended the Zambia Squash Association for adhering to transparency and accountability in the running of the sport.
Kalenga said during the official opening of the Zambia State Insurance Corporation General Insurance Midlands Open squash championship at the Lusaka Club on Thursday night that NSCZ is happy with ZSA administration.
Kalenga said NSCZ will contribute K2, 000 towards the hosting of the tournament.
He commended ZSIC General Insurance for pumping K50, 000 into squash at the time most of the business houses are shunning sponsoring sport.
And ZSIC General Insurance managing director Charles Nakhoze pledged to continue supporting squash.
He said his company will concentrate on promoting sports disciplines like squash because they have not been receiving adequate sponsorship.
And Chiteba said ZSA was humbled with the gesture from ZSIC General Insurance to sponsor squash.
