Malaysia, Peter Genever: "More please", squash coach asks from women players
PETALING JAYA: National squash head coach Peter Genever believes that it’s time that the second tier national players get out of their comfort zones.
His comments come in the wake of 19-year-old Rachel Arnold’s fine end to the Malaysian Tour Squash Circuit (SSJM) on Thursday. She won the 11th and final leg of the SSJM by beating Egyptian teenager Menna Hamed in the final.
But Rachel’s first Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour triumph could not hide the fact that the national women’s players are not quite ready to step up to the plate yet.
Players like Rachel, Vanessa Raj, Teh Min Jie and S. Sivasangari have made the finals before but have always fallen short due to nerves.
“Rachel winning on Sunday is a good conclusion to this year’s SSJM … but we were hoping for a little more,” said Genever.
“We expected a little more from Vanessa and Min Jie, who both made the finals a few times but fell short in the end.
