I never met Charlie Haden, but he founded the CalArts jazz program at which a few of my close friends studied, and all those guys speak of him in only reverent tones. One of those friends told me he was once playing with Charlie and had just finished a solo when Charlie stopped him abruptly. “That was OK” said Charlie. “Now go back and play every note you just played, but this time play like a tree.”
