Interest in computer science among students, parents and teachers is surging, but access to the subject in our K-12 system is not. While 90% of parents want computer science taught in our schools, only 25% of schools offer rigorous courses.
Three governors (Asa Hutchinson R-AR, Jay Inslee D-WA, Gina Raimondo D-RI) are uniting to form a new partnership to close this gap. Governors in the new Partnership for K-12 Computer Science are working toward three key policy goals in their states:
- Enable all high schools to offer at least one rigorous computer science course
- Fund professional learning opportunities so teachers can be prepared to teach these courses
- Create a set of high-quality academic K-12 computer science standards to guide local implementation of courses.
The governors will also share best practices for computer science and advocate for federal policies to expand computer science instruction.
Governors Jay Inslee and Asa Hutchinson will serve as the bipartisan co-chairs for the initiative. The initial members of the partnership will be the co-chairs and Governor Raimondo. The Governors are calling on their colleagues to join them in this Partnership.
In January, President Obama proposed $4.1 billion in his budget to expand K-12 computer science. One of every three schools in the US participated in the Hour of Code last year. Since 2013, more than 20 states have proposed policies to expand computer science instruction, and tens of thousands teachers are being prepared to teach this subject. While our country’s leaders may be divided on many issues, expanding access to K-12 computer science is one they are all rallying behind.

Are you or do you know any qualified teachers who might be looking for teaching opportunities this summer? Do you have experience teaching middle schoolers and/or high schoolers about programming, video game design, app development, or wearable technology and electronics?
If you do, message me at http://thelearningbrain.tumblr.com/ask. I might have the perfect opportunity for you at the summer school of a well known prep school in the northeast.
If you’re an Education tag editor, could you boost this please?
