The purpose of education should be to make an attempt at encompassing the knowledge of the world, no, the universe, in an interactive manner. Why sit for God knows how many years in a filthy non-creative and utterly uninspiring room, when we can accomplish so so so much more with our lives from the very beginning. I’m talking travelling, meeting new people, new cultures, observing and absorbing everything around you with all your senses. Nowadays the world is a chaotic place not because it’s just the way things work. People aren’t angry, sad, poor, and miserable because they want to. Due to the horrible close-minded educating system no one ever gets the chance to experience what it’s really like to be inspired by life- not bored to death from it. We sit in those classrooms all throughout school and college, being taught what is thought to be necessary. But how do you expect us to leap from this void after “the school experience” ends?? It’s not an accident that so many people live dull lives- that’s what they’ve been taught to do in school. They don’t know how to live, no rules, no one to guide you. It’s a known fact, that we never stop learning, but how does that matter when we haven’t even really started living yet?

We at The 524 Project believe that the purpose of education is to generate. To generate new ideas, to generate new narratives, to generate new leaders for the world of tomorrow. Education is like the soil from which sprout little tendrils of knowledge, young and delicate shoots of developing worldviews. The more fertile we can make this soil, the stronger the shoots will be–but if we drain the soil of its nutrients the new ideas will wither and die.
It is our role as educators and artists–strong trees with solid roots–to keep the soil rich despite all those who would wish to suck it dry. Though it is not easy to do so, we are much stronger together than we are apart!
Check out the work we’re doing to fertilize the soil in Detroit and DC at http://524project.tumblr.com/

To me the purpose of education is to help people grow and expand their knowledge. I strongly believe that education should help people find their passion in life, because to me, passion = happiness. Education should also educate people to think positively.
For example, there are two twins, one twin has positive thoughts and the other doesn’t. One day, something tragic happens in their lives. The one with the positive outlook takes this experience and overcomes it more quickly than the other and perhaps helping others along the way. The amount of pain the positive twin inflicts on herself through her thoughts is at a much of a lesser degree than the twin without a healthy positive outlook. The other twin that doesn’t have healthy thoughts will take longer in overcoming the same situation because the pain this twin inflicts on herself is a lot greater than the other twin, or maybe this twin may never overcome the negative situation. This is all due to the thoughts one creates in their mind.
So guiding and teaching healthy thought, to me, is very important.

I believe that the purpose of education is to teach people to think. My parents never gave me a direct answer to my questions about what I should do. They always asked me to consider the pros and cons, then make my own decision. While there are certain things that one must learn by rote, such as how to spell, how to do basic math, how to read, etc.; the ultimate goal of learning all of these things, is to be able to think coherently and logically. One can always ask for input as one makes a decision, but one must own that decision once it is made. After all, if one acts on that decision, then one has chosen that decision, thus one is responsible for its consequences, and one owns it, whether one admits it or not.

I believe the purpose of education should be to help people understand and explore their world, their environment, and their possibilities as people. Sadly it seems that education in the United States is more and more focused on getting a good job, and while that is certainly an important part of life, there is more to life.
Education should be, especially when one is young, about finding out what is out in the world and finding out what interests oneself. Then, as education furthers, the main focus should be on those things based on individual interests, going deeper into things. Education should provide a person with a base knowledge for life, not just a possible career.

I don’t consider it a coincidence, Simply enough you send the message to the universe and you get it back. I was talking about a similar issue this afternoon with a colleague.
To begin with I like to make it clear that the education is nothing but what makes the education, “Us People” and to go even further the tools and and and the instruments that turn that theory into practice is again nothing but “Us People”. Sad enough to say that we teachers are the most powerful instruments among others.
If as a teacher I recognize my role in the system and really dedicate my self to what I have taken a my career then my fellow colleague feel the same, the chain effect will goes on showing the result. What are the things that I should dedicate myself to? Well to understand this you need to look back and see if you really are made or born as they say to be teacher.
It is not that I simply go to my class grab a lesson plan and finish my teaching assigning homework happily leave the class. Wrong, and when I say wrong I mean it with a capital W.
This is what most of the so-called teachers do and the result is not hard to imagine, students hating teachers, education, and teachers hating teaching and education, and they don’t realize that what they hate is the result of what they have made.
I can’t show how much this quote by Haim Ginott turn my view tremendously and I always have it at the back of my mind
I have come to a frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a person’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a person humanized or de-humanized.
When I understand that I am in the class not only to cover some pages and teach , but also to have a great and positive effect on my students to push them an inch forward in the direction of humanity and growth, when I understand that the most important thing I, as a teacher, should do is to teach my students the precious values of life and behavior. what am I doing? isn’t it a great leap into a better education? Isn’t it the purpose of education? Are we aware of that? do we consider ourselves a powerful instrument that can shape the future?
A mother once asked Gandhi to get her son to stop eating sugar. Gandhi told the child to come back in two weeks. Two weeks later the mother brought the child before Gandhi. Gandhi said to the boy, “ Stop eating sugar.” Puzzled, the woman replied, “ Thank you, but I must ask why you didn’t tell him that two weeks ago.” Gandhi replied, “ Two weeks ago I was eating sugar.”
I said that because I believe the majority of teachers are not aware of what their purpose is in the system of education. When I take one step forward to understand myself, my goal in teaching, and how powerful and effective I can be in the system of education, apart from numerous problems we have regarding finance. then we can understand the purpose of education and transfer it to people sitting in front of us.
The object of education is to prepare the young to educate themselves throughout their lives.
