women of mythology - asteria

great titan oracle, goddess of necromancy she passes this gift to her only child, her daughter hecate. she is the reader of the stars that hang in the heavens, teller of prophesies, seer of visions, mistress of dreams that hold a glimpse into the future, and falling stars that streak across the midnight blue sky. she is asteria.

the great titan war steals her husband perses from her, leaving her to vulnerable to the advances of the king of the gods, zeus himself. but she is not so easily tricked or charmed by him, fleeing on foot and transforming herself into a quail to escape him. but it is not enough, he will not be stopped and with no other means of fighting him, she throws herself into the sea.

there upon the cresting waves and foam of the aegean she becomes delos, an island, isolated and finally at peace. as if knowing she would be needed in such a form, she becomes shelter and safety for her sister leto, and her offspring fathered by zeus, apollo and artemis, the twins of the sun and moon. here in the bosom of her trees and rocks she protects them from a vengeful and hurt hera, the only piece of earth the goddess can not touch.
