New Student Monday!

So you’re a science major with competitive grades, thinking about graduate school. Your professors and advisers support it. If you are on the fence, we’ve found a couple of articles to help you unpack your reasons and figure out if it really is the right path FOR YOU. 

In particular, STEM students from underrepresented minority groups (URM) experience a unique set of challenges that are important to consider.

Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein is a 32-year-old theoretical astrophysicist. Her academic home is arguably the nation's most elite physics department, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology

This woman has so very much to say about being a black, queer woman in a STEM field in which not only blacks, but women are but one group of a long list of underrepresented and underserved minorities. We thought it was well worth the read for her perspective, her clear-eyed activism, and her inspiring path.

A PhD student in psychology recently sent us a question that isn’t uncommon among grad students:

“Why is the process of getting a Ph.D. made to be like ‘hazing’, instead of celebrating the ones who are making a commitment to contribute to academia and the field?”

Dr. Renetta Tull, Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Education & Postdoctoral Affairs, of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, responds:

“The academic process of obtaining a PhD is considered to be rigorous because of the structure that has been built around creating ‘new’ knowledge. Not all programs use a ‘hazing’ process, some are more encouraging and collaborative- they are quite progressive! However, for most, there is the ‘test’ of being sure that a (new) person who is going to be called an expert in the field is well-versed in the history of the discipline, methodologies, other contributors to the field, et cetera. The celebration comes at the end, once one becomes a colleague. Again, while most advisors and committees require rigor and proof of competence, not all resort to hazing.”
