For the most part unwilling to go on the record because they didn’t want to be seen as criticizing a place where they’ve worked, the veterans described how The National—embattled and unprofitable—has veered adrift from its lofty ambitions, rendering what could have been the last great newspaper launch of our time into a cautionary tale about pursuing journalism in a censored society.
