This is a wacky freaking article about a building where some rents are like $40,000 per month and other rents are $1,100 per month. Some tenants negotiated away the privileges of their family to inherit their rent controlled apartments. Nuts.
“I remember buying a tenant out early on who was paying $275 a month for a 4,000-square-foot apartment,” said Gary Barnett, who purchased the landmark building in 1994. “So I bought him a house in the suburbs.”
