Ang Lee, most known for directing, “Hulk” and “Brokeback Mountain,” takes on the next challenge by creating one of the most well known books known to American literature, “Life of Pi.” Based off of the novel by Yann Martel, the film adaption by the screenwriter David Magee was released on Nov. 21, 2012 giving fans as well as the attracted people the chance to look closely at the story of the main character Pi and what things he has to overcome to stay alive in this adventurous fantasy of strength, wits, and courage.

“Life of Pi” is about a sixteen year old boy named Pi and his family who own a zoo in Pondicherry, India, which gives Pi the opportunity to learn about the animals that surround him during most of his childhood. In the hasty decision to sell the zoo for a better life in Canada, Pi and his family leave on a boat towards their destination when a storm hits leaving him helpless when torn away from his family and cast away in the deepest parts of the Pacific Ocean.  Pi is stranded with no hope of survival and no time to think when challenging obstacles take over his territory in the life boat.  One of the most well known predators that enter his life is a tiger named Richard Parker that happened to slip in the boat during the storm. This story is all about facing and conquering your darkest fears, discovering faith in God, and finding an appreciation to life in its own creation.

The movie is right on track at the box office with an estimate of $30.2 million on its first week released. It ranks number five on the charts right behind, “Rise of the Guardians” and “Lincoln.” For the actor Suraj Sharma who played Pi, shockingly this movie was his debut and his first appearance in a big production like this. I applaud his job portraying Pi and creating an atmosphere that was appealing as well as believable when it came to his emotions and life he put into the movie especially for a viewer who did not read the book prior to the movie. It was a real treat watching it in 3-D, which is highly recommended. If you are tight on cash, it is best to consider going to a matinee, which only cost about $8.50 in 3-D where it would cost up to $14 or more seeing a regular showing. “Life of Pi” is a movie you will love for its values, symbolism, and sense of what it takes to strive for a goal just beyond your reach. It is a movie you won’t want to miss because it is something you will treasure for the rest of your life.

To see more of Suraj Sharma you can view his interview on the Jimmy Kimmel Show on IMDB.
