People ARE curators. They (and we) just don’t know it yet.
I wonder if “digital curation” is just another strain of the discipline; it’s just that it deals with “objects” that are neither unique or scarce. It has its own practices, as does film curation or arms & armor curation (to use two random examples). It’s easy to argue that either this “counts” as curation or it doesn’t, but I don’t know if that even matters. The reality is that it is occurring anyway. The question is whether we recognize it as an emerging discipline or not.
It would be interesting to combine this discussion with the crowdsourcing conversation also happening at this conference, since the two are related. Digital curation is not adding “crowdsourcing” to existing practice; crowdsourcing is fundamental to the way the discipline works.
