Over the years, trees have grown and the gardens have been expanded, supporting a boldness that proved visionary. To the walled kitchen garden built at the same time as the house, Count and Countess Charles de Salis have added touches of their own such as the ha-ha wall and the sunken garden at the far end of the lawn, pleached lime trees and now their grand luxury yurt. It’s a beautifully decorated two-pod set-up, in a private spot behind the kitchen garden, looking out onto the gentle Somerset countryside.

The grounds and gardens are full of wonders, but if the kids aren’t interested in the apple pergola or the aisle of golden laburnum so popular with Yarlington’s wedding guests, they can always arrange with Charles and Carolyn to have a dip in the family swimming pool. A fantastic local ‘foodie’ pub is a 5 minute walk and Stourhead and Longleat a short drive away.
