In preparation for Moscow, SPIKES has tracked down 10 great world champions to ask them about their golden moment. In 2009, US decathlete Trey Hardee struck gold in Berlin with a personal best total of 8790pts.

“I remember smiling a lot. I couldn’t believe what had just happened. Not only had I won, but I had set a huge personal best by 250pts to become one of the top Americans of all time.

“I felt like I won the lottery. I remember going back to watch more of the meet with my then girlfriend (now fiancé) Chelsea, and having a night in the town with a tonne of other athletes, mainly pole vaulters.

"It was not much more than a typical night out, except I was walking on air. I loved Berlin and still love going back to Germany each summer for training.

"I gave myself a few weeks off training for winning gold and then started looking for a new home. That was my treat. It was born out of necessity, but I couldn’t have done it without the win.”
