Quezon from convicts in gratitude for their Presidential Pardons).
Pictures taken while Malacañan Palace was lit up for Christmas.
Malacañan Palace has played a role in the life of Dr. Jose Rizal, whose last visit to Governor-General Eulogio Despujol on July 13, 1892 had ended with his imprisonment in Fort Santiago. And it was from within the Palace that on December 28, 1896, Governor-General Camilo de Polavieja gave the order for Rizal’s execution by musketry on December 30 in Bagumbayan.
Legend has it that upon learning of the sentence handed to her son, Teodora Alonzo climbed up the Grand Staircase on her knees, begging the Governor-General for clemency. His sisters also waited outside the Palace gates for a chance to beg the Governor-General to stay the execution, to no avail.
