““Hands up! Don’t shoot,” the protesters chanted as they marched from 14th and Broadway in the direction of Oakland Police Headquarters on 7th street. They were stopped short of the building by a line of officers blocking off Broadway. The protesters pledged the march would be non-violent and it was. “We’re not looking for violence,” said organizer Cat Brooks, “We want the message to be about the dead black and brown babies, not about anything else.” For about an hour, the demonstrators faced off with police before returning to 14th and Broadway where they blocked that intersection. Wanda Johnson, the mother of Oscar Grant, addressed the crowd there. “When Ferguson went down, my heart just sank again,” Johnson said, “another senseless killing and another cover-up scheme again trying to demonize the young man.” Johnson says her family traveled to Ferguson to speak with Brown’s family.”
