Before you could Google it: A young woman uses the card catalog for research at the temporary (but long-term) Chicago Public Library branch inside the Mandel Building, 425 N. Michigan Ave., in December 1975. The Mandel Building, demolished in 1989, was right on the Chicago River. At the time of the Mandel’s demise, Tribune architecture critic Paul Gapp wrote: “In a city such as ours, whose architecture is one of its mightiest civic assets, perhaps every major structure deserves an obituary when its time comes. Requiescat in pace, Mandel Building.” Photo by Michael Budrys #chicagoarchitecture #chicagopubliclibrary #bookit #deweydecimalsystem #cardcatalog
