Obit of the Day: Frozen Dead Guy Days
In 1989, Bredo Morstoel died. He was 89. He was cryogenically frozen hoping to be revived when medical technology made it possible. Four years later, a family member took Mr. Morstoel and another frozen body to Nederland, Colorado to begin a cryogenic center. Well the folks of Nederland didn’t love that idea and passed a law to prevent it. The entrepeneur and one body left. Mr. Morstoel stayed.
Since 2002, Nederland has taken advantage of its lone cryogenic client by hosting a three day late-winter festival: Frozen Dead Guy Days (FDGD). It features coffin races, naming of an Ice Queen, and tours of Mr. Morstoel’s sarcophagus as well as other morbid events.
FDGD, which, as the Times noted, has become alcohol-laden and lost some of its original meaning. (Really?) The town is now selling the festival rights because it has gotten too big. Over 20,000 visitors came to visit Nederland this March for the festival. Mr. Morstoel is not for sale.
