Obit of the Day: Whitney Houston
Grammy Award-winning singer Whitney Houston has died suddenly at the age of 48. Houston who exploded onto the music scene with her 1985 debut album Whitney Houston which scored her seven consecutive Billboard number one hits - a first*. Over her career she won 6 Grammys, 1 Emmy, and 22 American Music Awards. She also made the “Star Spangled Banner” a pop hit after her stirring January 1991 performance at Super Bowl XXV. Houston was successful across media platforms (as they existed in the 1980s and 1990s) appearing in television as well as several successful movies including The Preacher’s Wife and The Bodyguard. (The latter included the multi-platinum song “I Will Always Love You.”)
Houston had struggled with drug addiction as well as negative publicity regarding her marriage to former singer - and member of New Edition - Bobby Brown. Their relationship became the subject of the hit reality show Being Bobby Brown in 2002. Houston released her most recent album in 2009 and was cast as a stage mother in a remake of the 1976 film Sparkle.
