「当两条狗在街道上打斗时，没有人会认为，刺激它们的不是本能，它们受到什么高尚目的激励。
但是，假如它们可以产生人们所说的思想，假如它们受到的教育说，狗是有理性的动物，那么，我们可以肯定，在争斗过程中，它们会慢慢形成一种由观念构成的上层建筑。
它们争斗的原因其实是，它们身上的气味让激怒了对方。但是，假如它们的争斗伴随着思想活动，其中一条狗可能会说，它争斗的目的是为了提倡正确种类的气味（文化），另外一条说，它是为了坚持犬类固有的在路面上奔跑的权利（民主）。」
