6th Meeting of the OECD Water Governance Initiative

2-3 November 2015, OECD Headquarters, Paris

On 2-3 November 2015, the OECD Water Governance Initiative held its 6th Meeting at OECD Headquarters, Paris. The meeting gathered 100+ OECD-WGI members, policymakers and representatives from major stakeholder groups and organisations. The agenda, the list of participants and the slides are accessible online.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in the Global Water Agenda and to share knowledge on recent water governance projects and research. Breakout sessions discussed expectations and needs to follow-up on the OECD Principles on Water Governance, especially in terms of scaling-up good practices and drawing lessons from pitfalls or traps to avoid. In-depth brainstorming was carried out in smaller groups on the ways forward for the WGI, with strong support from members towards a best practice database and a set of water governance indicators. Participatory modelling on water governance was also pilot-tested to foster lively exchanges on real-life situations to manage water-related trade-offs at catchment level.

The main outcomes of the meeting include:

·      The translation of the OECD Principles on Water Governance in 15 languages to support greater dissemination and outreach across levels of government (click here to download them).

·      Launch of the OECD report on Water Resources Governance in Brazil and insights on the follow-up.

·      Discussion on the 2015 UN Sustainable Development Summit, the status of the Sustainable Development Goals Monitoring Framework, and the possible contribution of water governance indicators.

·      Discussion on the results of the World Water Council’s Survey about the 7th World Water Forum (12-17 April 2015, Republic of Korea) and the milestones to the 8th World Water Forum (March 2018, Brasilia).

·      Knowledge-sharing on water in cities, water and land, drought adaptation assessment frameworks, accountability and integrity Outlooks & Programme, utilities’ management models, and lessons from national experiences (Netherlands, Palestine, Brazil).

·      Key messages from recent water events by SIWI, IWA, OSCE, EURO-INBO, Spain/Mediterranean, Portugal.

·      Bottom-up discussions on WGI’s 2016-2018 proposed activities for greater implementation & outreach.

·      Support to work towards a special issue of Water International on the OECD Principles (interested members should contact soo@iwra.org and Aziza.akhmouch@oecd.org by 23 November 2015).

·      Greater insights of the practical implications of water governance, through IRSTEA-led participatory simulation, and the needed tools and methodologies to manage complexities at catchment level.

It was launched on 27-28 March 2013 and is chaired by Peter Glas, President of the Dutch Association of Water Authorities. The WGI is hosted by the OECD, and coordinated by a multi-stakeholder steering committee (see below logos).
