"A solo performance by British saxophonist Evan Parker might make you rethink everything you know about music. You could be reminded of John Coltrane’s sheets-of-sound period, or the relentless, near-static textures of Gyorgi Ligeti’s keyboard music, or maybe Igor Stravinsky’s late-period micro-counterpoint, or maybe nothing you’ve heard before. On his own, Parker uses extended techniques like circular breathing, rapid tonguing and multiphonics, to create the illusion of polyphony; when he performs with others, some sort of next-level, breathless musical language is reached. Fresh off a week-long residency at the Stone in New York, Parker visits New Haven’s Firehouse 12 on Friday, Sept. 19, where he’ll perform with guitarist Joe Morris and trumpeter Nate Wooley; the following night, he kicks off the Improvisations series at Real Art Ways in Hartford with Morris and trumpeter Stephen Haynes."
