I have a theory about that.

Consider, for instance, what happens to the protagonists of a story from the Cthulhu Mythos; the sheer nature of Mythos creatures alone is enough to shatter the psyche of any who encounter them, more so if you happen to encounter one of their constructs (such as, for instance, the Elder Gods’ city of R'lyeh, whose appearance is heavily implied to follow the geometric and physical laws of a universe that is utterly alien to ours).

It is, therefore, possible that we are to the Boneless what Mythos creatures are to us: so utterly alien and incomprehensible that it drives you insane.
