Missy’s appearance in Flatline.

WHY

THAT LAUGH

HER FUCKING FACE

#i mean why couldn’t we stick with the whole ‘aliens who want to understand and wind up hurting people instead’ #and then we all sit down for a nice chat and they integrate into society

I have a theory about that.

Consider, for instance, what happens to the protagonists of a story from the Cthulhu Mythos; the sheer nature of Mythos creatures alone is enough to shatter the psyche of any who encounter them, more so if you happen to encounter one of their constructs (such as, for instance, the Elder Gods’ city of R’lyeh, whose appearance is heavily implied to follow the geometric and physical laws of a universe that is utterly alien to ours).

It is, therefore, possible that we are to the Boneless what Mythos creatures are to us: so utterly alien and incomprehensible that it drives you insane.

Hm. Maybe they thought three dimensional creatures, merely by existing, were a threat to their existence?

And they were simply attempting to evaluate how much of a threat they were, and what might happen if these three dimensional creatures came into their plane?

They concluded, after the expedition returned, that 1) 3D beings cannot survive in two dimensions, and 2) THIS 3D PLANE IS EFFING SCARY, LET’S PRETEND IT DOESN’T EXIST FOR THE SAKE OF OUR OWN SANITY (one might be reminded of a certain quote from the first Men in Black movie).

#also the fact is they’re as mind-breakingly weird to us as we are to them

Mmm… I’m not so sure about that. I mean, yeah, it’d be hard to figure out just how two-dimensional life works (it probably wouldn’t make much sense outside of a 2D frame of reference), but we can contemplate and even witness their existence without going completely bonkers. Can’t say the same about Mythos creatures (well, at least not for the witnessing part).

Though it is possible that we might be perceived as a threat, particularly if we’re essentially their version of a Mythos creature.

…I hope we get to see more of the Boneless, they’re an interesting species.
