it’s Erik Kesseler’s exhibit, circa 2011 at the Foam gallery( in Amsterdam) showing more than a million photos, those of which were published on flikr in a day… ~~WRAP YOUR MIND AROUND THAT!~

Did you catch Marvin Heiferman’s lecture “Why We Look & What We See," Wednesday in the carroll room? The dude, a curator, writer and editor, was well versed in the scope and depth of the photo world. He just publishedPHOTOGRAPHY CHANGES EVERYTHING, a book demonstrating the malleability and fluidity of photography regarding interdisciplinary studies. His jist: "There is no single narrative of the medium.. People like myself are always trying to figure photography out, but photography has become a moving target… It’s unruliness is what I’m interested in!”

His lecture spanned:

A. ease of digital imaging (1.3+ billion new photographs are published everyday on the internet through social media platforms.. HOLY TOLETO, batman) 

B. “the ‘digital revolution’ has been going on for 40 years.” CHECK IT: the first DIGITAL camera, ever.

C. the underestimated and mighty weapon that is PORN (ey- anyone seen blue is the warmest color yet??)

This is Amelia’s first time curating an exhibit, thanks to Student Picks!

First, what is Student Picks?

Student Picks is SCMA’s student exhibition program. Each month a selected student has the opportunity to organize a one-day exhibition using the Cunningham Center’s collection of prints, drawings and photographs. Run by lottery, Student Picks is open to ALL Smith students, regardless of major, class year or experience. The exhibitions are held in the Cunningham Center in the SCMA on the first Friday of each month during the academic year, from 12–4 PM.

Amelia’s Exhibit: Human Connections: Manifestations of the Mundane

Amelia wants viewers to think about everyday situations in a different way. She was inspired by Lorna Simpson’s photography , and decided to curate her exhibit to “bring our ordinary lifestyles into the limelight”. Amelia was also inspired by her First Year Seminar course called Utopia and Nature, and wanted to evoke viewers to grasp of sense about their identity through looking at things or at other people from a distance. She brings together color, geometry and movement thoughtfully, and the works that she compiled are linked to one another, and different evokes different feelings through the pairings and careful selections of the photographs. For someone who claims to not have much experience with art or art history, this exhibit is thoughtfully curated and shows Amelia’s maturity well beyond her years. Thank you to everyone who turned up for the show!

Don’t let those chairs stay unoccupied! 
TODAY, April 3rd, join disabled students and allies in an awareness event on Chapin Lawn.

From 10am to 4pm, 400 chairs will be installed on the lawn, representing every student registered with the Office of Disability Services. Each chair will have a photograph, fact, or story on the back.

At 4pm, Jennifer Matos will be speaking about disability and social justice. Everyone is invited to take a seat and show Smith how many people are affected by disability, whether it’s yourself, a friend, or a family member.

At 7:30pm there will be an open mic event in the Carrol Room where students will share their stories. We hope to see you there!
