Oily skin is when your face overall looks greasy and your makeup tends to look broken down, splotchy, etc. Dewy skin is adding glow and shine to areas that you want giving your face a radiant glow.

Adding some glow and sheen to the skin is great for making your face look more radiant and healthy. Sometimes an all matte face can look too powdery and can seem obvious you’re wearing makeup. Naturally our skin isn’t flat and matte so keeping a little sheen or adding glow will make your makeup look more like skin. 

To keep dewy skin from looking “oily” you want to keep the areas that would normally get oily matte like the chin, forehead, and inner cheeks. If you have oily skin you’ll want to use a primer and long wearing foundation under any illuminator you put on your skin so you’ll stay oil free longer and just look dewy instead of oily. You can also choose the level of shine by choosing a product with less shimmer/shine or choosing one thats super glowy/shimmery. A less shimmery product will look less “oily”.

See how in the picture below her skin looks more on the oily side because her forehead, inner cheeks and around the nose looks a little oily. 

You want to add shine to the bridge of the nose, cheek bones, upper lip and inner corner of the eyes (optional). This will add an overall glow to the skin but not look too shiny. Notice how the forehead, inner cheeks and chin are more matte keeping the look from coming off as oily.
