Anyone who has read ‘Silver Wattle’ will know that I am passionate about our beautiful Australian wildlife. They are our national treasures! I especially love our kangaroos.
What surprises me, when I look back on it, is that it was my Russian mother who gave me a love of the Australian landscape and it was my father who taught me to recognise the different species of birds.
I did not learn a thing about Australian animals or birds in school and I grew up in a bushland area! It was only when I joined WIRES that I even learned anything about basic native animal first aid.
I recently accosted a man and his companion who were releasing a possum (nocturnal animal) in broad daylight kilometres away from where they had illegally trapped it. And he turned out to be a primary school teacher! Shame on him!
Don’t let your children grow up without appreciating our beautiful country and all its treasures. Fellow author and wildlife carer, Margaret Warner, has written a number of books about Australian wildlife and caring for the environment for kids aged 6-12 years.
