Social Networking in the 1600s
Coffeehouses were once the distracting new spaces for sharing information and ideas.
These “penny universities” were feared to be keeping young people from their studies and work. Now social media is experiencing the same time-wasting complaints.
But social media sites are continuing the coffeehouse tradition of allowing people from different backgrounds to mingle and engage in diverse conversations.
