Henry Bibb, a slave.
As a child, Bibb saw his brothers and sisters sold to different slave owners. Bibb was hired out to various slave holders and had little contact with his mother.
Bibb married in his late teens but was furious when his wife’s owner forced her to become a prostitute. As he explained: ”A poor slave’s wife can never be true to her husband contrary to the will of her master. She can neither be pure nor virtuous, contrary to the will of her master. She dare not refuse to be reduced to a state of adultery at the will of her master.”
After making several attempts to escape he was finally successful in 1837.
This unfortunate account of Racist (White Supremacist) terrorism helps illustrate the counter-racist code that says one should refer to their partners as an “attempted wife” or “attempted husband”.
Below is an explanation excerpted from The Code Book, written by Neely Fuller Jr.:
As long as White Supremacy exists, no non-white person can function as a “husband”, or as a “wife”, to any person(s) –white or non-white. Non-white persons who attempt to function as “husbands” or as “wives” fail to do so. They fail to do so because they are, in every major area of activity, subject to the direct or indirect power of the White Supremacists (Racists). Being subject to the power of White Supremacy (Racism) means that all major decisions that affect the functions of all non-white so-called “husbands”, or all non-white so-called “wives”, are directly, or indirectly, made by the Collective White Supremacists.
Under White Supremacy, non-white people only pretend to be “husbands”. They only pretend to be “wives”. They only pretend to be “parents” to “children”.
