Apparently the word “gospel”  comes from an Old English “godspel” meaning “good news”. 

The word “God”  does not come from the Old English for “good”, of course. But confusion between “God” and “god” (pronounced kinda like “gode” I think) did kinda turn gospel from meaning any kind of good news to Have You Heard The Good News About Our Lord and Saviour?

(I think “god” meaning like “deity” also goes back to Old English, and derives from Proto-Germanic.)
