fancy plants of the week…

Romneya coulteri (Matilija poppy), is doing its thing right now, showing off romantic papery white blooms from impressive heights.

the Matilija poppy is one of my favorite California natives, mostly because it doesn’t look like any of the rest, it has the largest bloom of any ca native on 6’+ stalks. their bloom is unusual - a giant poppy that attracts bees and butterflies like crazy, and smells fantastic when first open.

Matilija poppies spread easily by underground runners, so one plant can turn to many in a just a few short years (i love me a more-bang-for your-buck sorta plant). be aware though, if they are in sandy soil and enjoying full sun they could easily take over your garden. no need to fertilize, just water twice a week until established then let nature take care of the rest.

R. coulteri makes a super fancy cut flower as well, just be sure to clip it while in bud.
