Manic Monday: Shore to Shore

!

It’s been a wild month. Between Bonnaroo and July 4th, I’ve barely had a moment to catch my breath. And then, these past few weeks have been all about losing it again with inspiring pop-up tech and the Jersey Shore. Ready, steady… go. It’s Manic Monday, summer-style.

Note: Some restaurants have been withheld in order to wow you with a special Resto Week post… check back Thursday for the juicy details.

Inspire. @CreatorsProject.
Country Hoping. 12 Hours.

You’re probably sick of hearing about it but… Jetsetter partnered again with our friends at Vice Magazine to give away two tickets to the Creators Project London. For those out-of-the-know, The Creators Project is a partnership between Intel and Vice Magazine that self-describes as,”a new network dedicated to the celebration of creativity and culture across media, and around the world.” The New York event kicked off a series of five Creators Project events around the world with stops in London, Sao Paulo, Seoul, and ending with a three-day grand finale in Beijing. Each stop features performances, screenings, and exhibits highlighting the fusion of technology and creativity.Check out my video of the New York exhibit and check back soon… we may or may not be sending one lucky fan to Rio (wink).

Brunch. @Back Forty.

NYC. Sunday. 11 AM.

Ok, I’ll admit it. I was trying for Clinton Street Bakery, but with a three-hour wait, I had to search for an alternate. Enter Back Forty - a sustainably minded spot on Avenue B where a seasonal cocktail or dish isn’t as boring as it may sound.  Grab a spot at the twelve-seat bar or one of the communal wooden tables where you can annoy your neighbor with questions about their order (I totally did not do that). Order the Pork Jowl Nuggets with Jalapeno Jam (just don’t try getting a side of Jam, they negged me on that one) and Poached Eggs with Whitebean Ragout on Toast. But the real ticket is the Chicken with Waffles. Don’t skimp on the syrup.

Note: En-route to Back Forty, stop at one of the many small gardens in the area. Be sure to dance like a weirdo… it’s a great way to wake up.

Sip. @Trata.
Hamptons. Saturday. 10 PM.

Trata East, in Watermill, is known as one of the best restaurants out east. With breezy Greek cuisine and European inspired atmosphere, Trata fills that I-wish-I-were-on-a-Yacht-in-the-Mediterranean void. Sip Rose on the outdoor terrace at 6 pm on Friday, or experience the drastic transformation from resto-to-club on Saturday nights. Bongos drums? Check. Tambourines? Check. Sangria by the barrel? Check. Euro-electro blasting from the speakers? Check. Oh… right, they serve food too, with olive oil from Crete, sea salt from the Aegean and fresh figs from Sparta.

Tip: stash some ear phones in the Judith Leiber clutch… they’ll be clutch around midnight.

Live drums, latin beats and techno… Basically a dream combination. 11:14 PM Jul 10th

Dance. @Lily Pond.
Hamptons. Saturday. 1 AM.

The guys behind Stereo and PM in NYC decided to head east three years ago and work their magic on a 7,000 square foot space. Expect the usual club-scene: beautiful girls waiting at the door, a reservations-only policy and big scary bouncers. Yet once inside, Lily Pond is shockingly different than what you might expect. First, there’s both outdoor and indoor space, allowing us to take advantage of the cool summer breeze, French crystal chandeliers and oversized, yes oversized, banquettes and couches. To say that partying at Lily Pond is comfy would not be a joke. As equally not a joke is the music on tap this summer – Kaskade and Deadmau5 made appearances on July 4th, so I’m guessing there’s more in store for this summer staple.

I’m at Lily Pond (44 Three Mile Harbor Rd, East Hampton). http://4sq.com/9tcMVZ 1:48 AM Jul 11th via foursquare

Explore. @Sag Harbor, Hamptons.
Sunrise. Sunset. Sunday.

I rarely cover an entire hood’ but Sag Harbor, located in both East Hampton and Southampton, has one of the most scenic drives East of NYC. Take a ride on Noyack Road, passing Wooley Pond and North Sea Harbor at sunset or head toward Sag Harbor passing Noyack Creek and Foster Memorial Town Beach for sunrise. The view are almost as good as the food; dish on lobster rolls at the Dock House, sip on Shiro Mojitos at Sen and stock up in sweets at the Sag Harbor Variety Store. It feels almost too American to be true.

Lay. @Washington Square Park.
NYC. Wednesday. 9 PM.

I know what you’re thinking. Washington Square Park… at night. Really?

Yes my friend, really. On a hot summers night, there’s nowhere better to lay like broccoli. The park, originally made famous by novelist Henry James, is not just home to spectacle-clad NYU kids (yes, I know, I’m one of those); the 9.75-acre space is full of life - especially at night. Bring a sheet, pick a spot and let the lethargy set in. Impromptu break dancing, acoustic folk groups and even some good ol’ fountain love. It’s available on tap where the Arch meets Fifth Ave.

Rage. @Tiesto.
NJ. Saturday. Midnight.

Tiesto made his @Asbury Park debut with two shows this past weekend at the beachy-keen convention center as part of his international “Kaleidoscope” tour. With sand in our toes, and glow sticks hidden away (the man himself requested they be confiscated at the door) we trekked inside the mammoth space to watch the artiste in action.

Tiesto explained why the strict policy on accessories: “The show features amazing lasers, light shows, and state-of-the-art video content as well as sound from one of the most powerful sound systems ever used,” Tiesto said. “I am sure the crowds will be ready to party, and we can turn the Jersey Shore into Ibiza, at least for a few nights.”

While it didn’t live up to its Ibiza hopes, Tiesto proved that one man is enough to handle the job. His set included work by Kid Cudi, Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Pharrell and countless other influencers in the electronic scene. As for the Jersey Shore: there were as many smiles as Ed Hardy hats and I was delightfully surprised at the subdued (relatively) ‘tude of the crowd… I even made a friend or two.

Dish. @Kenka.

Sunday. 9 PM.

After a recent stroll through St. Marks Square, I was determined to go back and test one of the restaurants on this vibrant block, simply because it reminds me of Tokyo. Kenka, an Izayaka or Japanese snack and sip café, offers over 100 items – everything from turkey testicles to miso-glazed intensines is on offer at this boisterous pan-asian place. On Sunday night, the line was out the door as a clear crowd of regulars guzzled Sapporro and Kirin over hangover-approved food. My order: Okonomi Yaki, Japanese pancakes with Pork, Squid and Veggies; Yakiniku, Japanese stir-fried BBQ Beef and Vegtables; Yaki Morokoshi, grilled corn-on-the-cob with sweet sauce and potato Croquettes.

The verdict: it feels a bit like Tokyo, looks a lot like Tokyo, but doesn’t exactly taste like Toyko. Head to Kenka for the scene and be sure to make your own cotton candy on the way out… if the booze doesn’t get the best of you.

St. Marks Place just made me miss #Asia.. especially on hot, sticky summer nights. #itrulymissyou #japan #vietnam #thailand
