SEEING MUSIC
M83’s Midnight City (or Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming in general)

Heard Midnight City on Jam 88.3 on the radio while driving home earlier, and I was reminded of a conversation I had with Karlo before about how M83’s music has evolved. I am not about to write some Pitchforkian review about their evolution. I am not as indie/geeky as Karlo. But upon being reminded about our conversation, I thought it’d be an interesting thing to write about.

All I really remember is Karlo saying something about how M83’s music is more NEON or FLUORESCENT now than it was before. And I was amused by his description of music, of sound, in COLOR, and that I actually understood what he meant.

Being a relatively visual person, I took great pleasure in fully absorbing what he said, and imagining the neon-ness or fluorescence of M83’s new sound (very 80’s & synthy – as I might suggest as a trend that emerged in 2011, also because of the OST of Drive), as compared to their former pastel-ness or ochre-ness (ethereal, nostalgic).

I think Midnight City’s official video also kind of shows the change from day to night, “pastel to neon”, and well, yeah, soft and heavenly to strong and electric.

Wala lang. Describing music through color. Seems really amusing to me. :P

Anyway, M83 is one of Karlo’s all-time favorite bands, and I guess you could say mine as well. I’m not hipster enough to know all the bands performing at Laneway in Singapore this February, but just knowing that I’m going to miss watching M83 is very sad. Very sad, indeed. :(

If anyone (other than Karlo) would like to sponsor my Laneway ticket, SG airfare and accommodations, you would be the most awesome person/collective ever. Perhaps I can start a Laneway fund, though it may be too late for that. Haha. Anyway, I will watch M83 perform when the time is right.

Hot pink & slime green,
Jen

P.S. With my Korg controller, I hope I can weasel my way into the LND, and make some M83-inspired tracks. Must learn how to use it soon! Argh!

P.P.S. Jam 88.3 is the best radio station to listen to when you don’t have your iPod. In my opinion.
