My Cousin Vinny: A lesson in screenwriting

After reading a bit of Syd Field’s screenwriting book, “Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting,” I have begun to grasp the structure of how screenplays are written; they are broken into four chunks: beginning, plot point 1, plot point 2, and ending. But the first 10 pages of any screenplay are the most important because they serve as the framework for the entire story. In the first 10 pages, translated into about 10 minutes on screen, the writer/audience must determine who the story is about (the main character), what the story is about (the main character’sdramatic need) and the circumstances surrounding the dramatic (or comedic) premise. Let’s put it this way, most movie-goers know within the first 10 minutes if they will like a movie or not, so these first 10 pages/minutes are crucial.
