Americans of F1: Eddie Cheever, Active in 1978,and from 1980-89. After a horrifying 1980 with the mediocre Osella squad, Cheever moved to Tyrrell for the 1981 season driving the 010 and 011 to a strong 12th place in the WDC, proving for the first time, the young American’s open-wheel talent on a global stage. In 1982, the Ligier owned Equipe Talbot Gitanes signed Cheever, where he scored his first podium (3rd) at Spa and another at Detroit (2nd), but once again reliability of the car led to multiple retirements, Cheever only finishing 6 of the 16 races of that year. In 1983, Renault gave Cheever the chance of a lifetime, driving an adequately funded car along side the great Alain Prost, while finishing only 8 of 16 races, he achieved a personal record of 7th in the WDC and assisted the team to 2nd in the WCC. 1983 marked the peak of Cheever’s F1 career, moving to Benetton Afla-Romeo for 84 and 85, their cars proving unreliable and just plain slow. In 1987 Cheever made the last deal of his carrer in F1, moving to the Milton Keynes based Arrows along side Derek Warwick until his retirement in 1989. He then moved to open wheel racing in the US where he remained active until 2006.Cheever went on to win the Indy 500 in 1998. formula one eddie cheever racing cars f1 arrows tyrrell benetton alfa romeo Renault Renault F1 Ligier Talbot Gitanes 1980s bio
