Why am I healing my adopted daughter’s damaged eyes today? Why couldn’t she just... wear the glasses?

Nick slipped off his suit jacket and draped it over the back of a kitchen chair then rolled up his sleeves. It was time for some good ole fashioned spring cleaning - and some home reorganization while he was at it! The kids were out with Billy and he had a few hours all to himself before they all showed back up. He could get a lot done!

First, this house just wasn’t suitable for his little monsters and honestly, there hardly seemed to be a point in moving anymore. The children seemed so rooted here and the environment wasn’t too bad, either. Harvey seemed to be building up his self-esteem a little more. Bill was making school friends and wearing long pants. Lele... well, Lele was always best suited to live here. She enjoyed feeling special and different and being among humans was the best thing for that, really. So, if they wouldn’t move, the house had to change.

Higher ceilings, for one. Lele (and Harvey, when it applied) couldn’t fly in the house. It was build for not-so-spectacular human beings and Nick had very spectacular children. An open floor plan downstairs, too - no walls separating kitchen and living room and dining room, maybe just a half wall to define the kitchen. That would give them plenty of space, he thought.

And upstairs? Well, the kids were growing fast. Bigger rooms, bigger beds, bigger closets... Bill was pretty much covered since he used his own magic, but Lele and Harvey could benefit from the added space... even though Lele already had the largest room in the house by a long shot. He gifted her a new, big dollhouse - simple, but he knew she would adore it. And for Harvey, he dedicated a corner of the enlarged space with plants large and small and ranging from carnivorous to medicinal to flowering. Against the wall, a library of books exploring exotic extraterrestrial and inter-dimensional flora and fauna - most written in languages Harvey would have to learn. But that was the fun of it! That’s why Nick included accompanying tomes written about the languages themselves.

His own room remained barely changed. He and Billy had what they needed, they weren’t growing. Well, Billy was growing old minute by minute but that was another thing. When he got all wrinkly, Nick supposed he’d have to worry about diminished eyesight and creaking bones - even demons probably weren’t immune to age, though it might take longer before the guy got bad, if ever.

After the renovation, Nick updated the furniture, adding in strangely shaped pieces that might be more comfortable for some of Harvey’s other forms, and updating the existing furniture to look more modern. Lots of black and white in the house, with yellow accents. Very geometric. He thought Billy would enjoy it.

With his job complete, he poured himself a drink and lounged on the chaise. Later on he might tweak things here and there based on the feedback, but for now he congratulated himself on a job well done.

It’d been... tough raising Lele lately, to say the least. With Billy’s encouragement, she’d learned to harness her newfound magic - not to say that Nick wasn’t more than pleased with her talent. It was just that the tantrums only got worse when your kid set fires with her mind.

And that was before she started making things explode.

Sure, when she’d accidentally blown off his hand, it’s not like she meant to do it... but Nick had a feeling most parents only had to deal with kids who’s misbehaviour involved pulling a siblings hair or something, or breaking a favourite vase.

She was getting better at controlling herself though. Nick was thankful for that. He worried sometimes that she might hurt accidentally hurt Harvey. Bill, well, he could mostly handle himself. The kid was practically a weapon of mass destruction in his own right.

Of course, Nick had no worries about Bill. The kid had shot up like a weed and dyed his hair brown (in the most mundane sense of the word) and mostly kept out of trouble. Sure, there were a few incidents here and there at school but Nick was proud to say it was all nothing anyone could prove. He took care of his siblings - especially Harvey. He was a good brother, what more could Nick ask for?

“I know.” She chirped. Then she nodded. “Yeah! Let’s head out. Where ya wanna go?”

She climbed out of her seat then hopped up and down, full of energy. “Hurry up and get up! C'mon, slowpoke!”

Billy made some money appear on the table- more than enough to cover the meal and a tip.  He thought to himself, “Hmm, I think I want,” he snapped his fingers, and they were in the house, “to brag!  Nick, guess what I saw Lele do!”

Nick stepped in. He smiled. “Did you two have fun at the park?” He asked, walking over to Billy and idly cleaning his face with a handkerchief. “I see you had lunch.”

“Yeah, we did!” Billy leaned into the kerchief, “But Nick, Lele learned a new trick,” he glanced at the girl, “maybe she can show ya later, but I tell ya, this is great news!  We’re demon dads!”

"We were already demon dads." Nick said, offering Billy a kiss when he was finished. Nick knelt down and picked Lele up. "So, you learned a new trick?"

"Yeah, I made fire today! With my hands!" She said, wiggling her fingers in front of Nick's face.

Nick raised an eyebrow and glanced at Billy. "Sounds like a good trick."

Nick’s hugs were so nice.  Harvey always liked them.

“Oh,” he said, “I’m great.  Haroc and I are sharing a bunk now.  So yes, in crew terms, we’re dating.  And I’m learning All-All, which is spoken which much more frequency in the Yodo galaxy.  The crew is good- we lost Preth- not to anything bad, xe just just decided to finally settle down and raise some chicks.  And-”

He realized that Nick wasn’t following, and she had nothing to go on.  Harvey was catching her as if it had been a year since he saw her, but that wasn’t the case.  She knew nothing about his life.

“Oh, wow, I guess I need to start from the beginning,” he itched.  By the time his skin got used to California air, he’d probably be back on the climate controlled ship again, “I work on a space ship, Nick.  We explore galaxies, try to learn about the universe and bridge peace between civilizations.  You know, go boldly where no one has gone before.  Only none of use are humans.  We also sort of grew up on different planets than our specieses originated.  That’s why we’re called the Band of Orphans.  Uh, it really doesn’t translate good into English.

“Anyway, I’m head doctor.  Patching my crew up, but also working with researchers on planets to come with new cures.  Did you know that in the future prion diseases aren’t a think of earth, thanks to the fatty part of a crab from planet Gow?” he beamed with pride.  He had a right to be proud of himself, “And that’s just the good I’ve done for Earth.

As Harvey spoke, a grin spread across Nick’s face and it grew wider and wider until she was positively beaming at him. “You are an amazing kid, Harvey - I’m so proud of you! I’d say I can’t believe how successful you’ve become but I’d be lying, I know how wonderful you are.”

She couldn’t help but pull him into another tight hug. “I can’t believe I helped raise you. You’re... so much more!” She pulled back but kept her hands on his shoulders. “I hope I’ve done a good job raising you. You obviously turned out alright but... well, you’re still very young in this timeline and I’m not exactly a perfect parent. I hope I’ve done an alright job. If I haven’t, you let me know. I’ll go to the future and kick my own ass.”

She gave him a kiss on the forehead. “I love you.”

“Wow Nick, you haven’t changed a bit,“ Harvey said as way of a joke, "thanks!”

He shrugged, “I guess someone out there decided it was too long since I visited you,” which was true- Harvey had missed last Christmas with his mom.  Of course when they could video chat whenever, and Nick could simply materialize on the ship whenever she chose, it didn’t matter that much. “But no really- what else?  Magic.  I hope- I hope this isn’t weird?  For you, I mean?”

“No, it’s not weird.” She said, shaking her head and releasing Harvey.

Except then something hit her. Her Harvey. Where was he? The thought made her panic briefly, until she realized that he probably wasn’t somewhere else all by himself... She didn’t understand the weird magic that had likely caused this - that stupid anon magic - but she had to believe he was safe.

It kept her on edge though. She was quite protective of Harvey... To have him not be here at all...

She took a deep breath. “How are you? What are you up to these days?”

The nostalgia got old fast.

This town had been great for little kid him.  Actually, it hadn’t even been great for little kid him.  He had spent a lot of time here being sad.  After a while of walking alone, Dr. Harvey kind of felt sad.  He felt even more sad that Billy and not Nick was here.  He didn’t want to be that guy, but it was obvious how much Billy doted on Lele, and Harvey had never gotten that from him.

He missed his crew- a misfit second family he had found in the stars.  And he worried about their upcoming mission- it was a dangerous one.  He wanted to work.

He came home and tried to find ways to work.  Billy and Lele were snoozing anyway.  He stumbled around for things to do, but finally found a project to keep him busy.  First he tried contacting any of his crew, but his phone was completely useless for communication, relying on technology that didn’t exist.  And even if he didn’t, he sure as heck couldn’t call another time.

He got out his chemistry equipment and labtop.  The device was scanning a bit of DNA- his DNA.  He was still trying to find his planet, and to do so, he was sequencing his own DNA.  After his study of the galaxies’ creatures, he’s discovered that organisms from certain solar systes shared certain DNA markers.  Of course, the DNA of his species tended to change itself to adapt to whatever planets the individuals settled on, so Harvey had a ‘pure’ sample- that was from fifty two- or was it thirty four? years ago, retrieved by Billy.  From his egg.

Harvey was working on isolating the fly and frog DNA and removing them, when he sensed, presence.  He knew Nick was home…

Sometimes during his growing up years, Harvey had developed (admittedly weak) psychic powers.  Mostly this manifested and being able to turn into something specifically frightening in times of danger.  But sometimes it told him when someone was thinking about him.

His belly flopped and he crabwalked out of the room, to find the other demon.  Harvey was in his true form, so Nick would find him to look almost exactly the same, but taller, and wider, and more muscular, and with larger pincers and claw.

Nick was surprised when she saw Harvey, her hands flew up over her mouth. It wasn’t Harvey. But it was Harvey. It was pretty obvious just by looking at the guy that he was Harvey - but older. Somehow. Well, Nick knew firsthand how that typically went.

She stepped over to him. “Look at you! You’re so big.” It was stupid to say but she couldn’t help herself from saying dumb things sometimes. She offered him a smile and wrapped her arms around him. She felt proud just seeing him - her wonderful son, all grown up. “What are you doing here?”

Nick and Bill took an uber home. Honestly, Nick loved the modern world for innovations like that. She hated driving but in certain situations it was much easier and less obvious than just poofing around all over the city. And sure, there were some more supernatural driving options she was quite fond of but it wasn’t always worth the effort.

Bill stepped into the home first, still beaming from his recent win. “I’m gonna stick my ribbon to the fridge.” He announced, hurrying off to do so. Nick smiled to herself.

There was something different around the house, though.A difference in energies.

Lele was asleep - all normal there. And Billy. And... Harvey? Harvey was different. She couldn’t place exactly... why. Not without prying into his mind. She’d just wait until she saw him to make her determination.
