My new novel, BRAVO, will be released 22 July by Mulholland Books (mulhollandbooks) in both print and e-format.

This is the second in the Jad Bell series and follows directly on the heels of ALPHA. That said, the novel serves as its own entry into the series; you certainly don’t need to have read the first to enjoy this one (though it obviously won’t hurt if you did).

I’ve no idea of any appearance/signing schedule as of yet. I’ll let folks know as I learn it myself. I suspect any touring to be limited due to a variety of factors. I’ll let folks know which bookstores to contact if you’re seeking signed copies.

Those of you who’ve read my short story, “The End is Never Pretty,” will have met one of the main characters already. Those who haven’t and want to… I’ll be posting either the story or (more likely) a link to the story in the next couple weeks.

You can pre-order the novel just about anywhere that sells novels (except at Amazon right now - for a very good explanation of the Amazon/Hachette dispute, I direct you to this very good post by Jim Huang ), much as you can, say, pre-order LAZARUS just about anywhere that sells comics. If you are told this cannot be done, I’d advise you to take your business elsewhere.

Cheers!

Cannot wait.

How to Order the Sparrow & Crowe graphic novel.

This is important, folks. I know pre-ordering can sometimes seem complicated or unnecessary, but I assure you — we need the pre-orders if this book is going to see print. Retailers base their order directly on what they think the customer wants.

But I’d NEVER ask you to pre-order something of mine sight unseen. That’s why Jeremy, Jared,  Hermes Press, and I all agreed that we needed to make the first chapter of Sparrow & Crowe FREE. It’s online right here, or you can get it free through ComiXology.

And if you like what you see, PLEASE tell your local comic book shop or bookstore. The book is available to pre-order via Diamond (the comic book distributor) in the JUNE 2014 catalog!

Drawing stories of science with graphic novelist Jonathan Fetter-Vorm

Peek into the studio of author and illustrator Jonathan Fetter-Vorm, who reveals the creative process behind his recent book, Trinity: A Graphic History of the First Atomic Bomb.

Jonathan Fetter-Vorm and Bert Hansen will be telling true stories at CHF on January 22, and you are invited to watch via webcast. “Drawing History: Telling the Stories of Science through Comics and Graphic Novels” will air at 6:30 p.m. EST. Watch it live at chemheritage.org/histchem.

That’s the part that interests me about “The Bunker.” That’s what drove me to that book. We never have binary decisions. As you get older in life, the binary decision gets even rarer. Everything has consequences. Everything has a price. We spend our lives wrestling with that. At least I do.

This Wednesday, I start teaching my first comics class: Make Comics: Self-Published and Creator Owned.

I’m teaching it through Comics Experience, along with my friend and fellow creator Rob Anderson. There are still a couple of slots left (two, as of this writing), and you can read more about...

I am stopping by in November for a class about soliciting coverage from websites/podcasts for creator owned comics! Excited for Paul Allor, one of the hardest working writers I know, as he passes on his wisdom to the next batch of creative talent.

On this week's podcast, Josh and Conor insisted I am occasionally betrayed by a Philadelphia accent, try as I might to conceal it. Paranoid as I am, I listened to several Philadelphia and Mid-Atlantic accent videos and could not recognize myself in them. I have decided to try the Tumblr accent challenge. Feel free to try it yourself and upload the results.

It goes like this:

Questions:

Where are you from?

Pronounce the following words: Aunt roof route theatre iron salmon caramel fire water new Orleans pecan both again probably Alabama lawyer coupon mayonnaise pajamas caught naturally aluminum tumblr cracker jack doorknob envelope polka dots papaya pent-house subtext smile

What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?

What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?

What is the bug that when you touch it curls into a ball?

What do you call gym shoes?

What do you call your grandparents?

What do you call the wheeled contraption which you carry your groceries in at the supermarket?

What is the thing you change the tv channel with?

Choose a book and read a passage from it.

Would you be a wizard or a vampire?

Do you think you have an accent?

End audio post by saying any three words you want.

What Shakespeare really sounded like – linguists reconstruct a 400-year-old accent to remarkable results. For some Shakespearean reimaginings of a completely different nature, see Hamlet as a choose-your-own-adventure novel and if Shakespeare had written Star Wars.

THIS IS FASCINATING

I really want these two to solve mysteries on camera, and for that footage to then be edited and aired on television each week.

Video Games vs Real Life by Aled Lewis

Recently I was able to see Wreck It Ralph, which is a really good film by the way, and this delightful little series reminded me of it straight away. I’ve been a fan of Aled’s work for a long time and I’d seen this series when he first started it I guess, but I just forgot how much I love it. I can not recommend checking out his tumblr enough, his work is so good and his Toy Stories series is still a favourite of mine.
