I write about ladies kissing. Sometimes I write about the shows where ladies are kissing. Sometimes I reblog those shows and sometimes I get morose because Buffy.
And Grey's Anatomy.
And Xena.
And Once Upon a Time
And Agent Carter. Lots of and lots of the time because of Agent Carter.

Holy shit I think I just cracked the code of why people think you canā€™t sell things on Tumblr šŸ˜

I was reading one of the Substacks I subscribe to, talking about how they promote their publication and their various sources of traffic, when I came across this paragraph:

Now I happen to also run a fairly popular Substack (about gay vampires). One whose readers are almost entirely Tumblr users. And Tumblr clicks have just never shown up in my stats, Iā€™m used to it. Naturally I had to comment:

Itā€™s not just Substackā€™s tracking that doesnā€™t work on here. NO tracking works on here. Tumblr is just one of the last platforms left that completely obscures its usersā€™ data!

Thatā€™s why thereā€™s this persistent myth that you canā€™t advertise on Tumblr. It's not that you can't sell things here, it's that you can't use the invasive methods that are standard everywhere else.

Okay but this isnā€™t accurate? Iā€™ve been in digital publishing for well over a decade and live and breathe analytics. Tumblr had perfectly normal tracking cookies, etc for years. At one site I worked for Tumblr was a decent share of new traffic a decade ago. Mic used to get a good amount of traffic from Tumblr and enormous engagement on site. But the problem is click through on Tumblr really is horrible and has been for, again, over a decade. People will share a smart quote but they will not click the link to read the original story.

A big part of this is because Tumblr users are very savvy. They know how costly a click is and theyā€™d rather stay on the page! Thatā€™s really good for Tumblr itself, and great for users and itā€™s one of the reasons Iā€™m still on the site. Its users just wholesale refuse to engage with the economics of the internet and while thatā€™s how I and many others make a living god damn do I appreciate it.

But because of that the investment you put in, be it posts to encourage visits to your news site or ad campaigns for your product, nets a much much much smaller gain on Tumblr.

Like maybe Tumblr has recently axed all analytics so itā€™s harder to trackā€”that could be true and would make it much easier to comply with the GDPR. But if thatā€™s true itā€™s only because there was years and years of evidence that Tumblr is not worth it for advertisers or content creators on other ad platforms.

Personally I love that. I like that I can come here, turn off my internet brain, and just vibeā€”while occasionally dodging a graphic porn bot.

I'm obsessed with Carol Danvers. She's socially awkward. She's a war criminal. She's a cat mom. She's a Disney princess. She hates everything. She could beat the shit out of everyone. She's 60. She's half alien. She's a comedian. She's in a glass closet. She's a girlboss. She's a girlfail. She's everything to me.

DON'T LET THIS GO OUT OF CIRCULATION. ADD MORE ONTO IT. QUEUE IT. DON'T LET THIS SITE FUCKING FORGET. THIS TRIAL COULD HAVE MASSIVE CONSEQUENCES FOR THE WHOLE INTERNET.

this is one of the most important trials of the decade and could have wide ranging impact but itā€™s also a truly wild case. a lot of publications are covering it but itā€™s very difficult to cover because whole chunks of the trial are occurring behind closed doors and not in the public eye. ostensibly to protect the details of many of the terms of deals from these enormous companies. like one thing we learned so far? google pays apple 18 billion dollars a year to be the default search on ios. 18 BILLION A YEAR.

The parts of the case tried in public are also still in a federal court in DC that does not allow electronics meaning we are wholly relying on reporters to go sit in the court room and relay everything backā€”usually to another reporter sitting outside. The Verge, a tech pub, is doing this, as is The Register. Law360 is doing it probably the best but itā€™s a site largely behind a paywallā€”which given the cost of covering a trial like this itā€™s hard to complain about that but does reduce access.

The federal government is going to be ending its case soon and that case is a tricky one. Because theyā€™re claiming that Googleā€™s deal to put Google Search on iOS effectively destroyed the ability for other search engines to compete. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft agreed and said yupā€”Bing sucks because Googleā€™s so good no one uses Bing which means it canā€™t train itself to be better.

Googleā€™s case is that itā€™s simply the best and itā€™s not its fault other search engineā€™s suck.

So itā€™s basicallyā€¦if search engines can only be good through increased adoption is it really Googleā€™s fault itā€™s aggressively cut other search engines outā€”particularly in its deal with Apple?

Email your congress folks and senators and keep paying for the very good journalism covering this trial.

But also stop getting your news from social media and start supporting good publications putting in the actual work! this is a heavily covered trial if youā€™re reading actual news publications.

straight women need to start fetishising sapphic women so there can be more femslash fan fiction. we gotta outsource and get more writers on board. I want it to get to the point where two women cant be on screen together without having a 80k space opera fic written about them. I want show runners to be scared of cancelling sapphic shows because legions and legions of fans will come after them. dont tell me my priorities are wrong.
