Short Story Submissions Call!

TROUBLE THE WATERS:

Tales from the Deep Blue

edited by

She moves with deliberate grace.

Mami Wata, Momu Watu, La Sirene, Sedna, Coventina, Suijin, Mother of Waters

She is the water between us, the water within us, the water that slakes thirst, from which we were born. Water is the natural and the sacred, the functional and the necessary. All over the world, in cultures young and old, water is life and from this force, great adventures, quests, and legacies begin. And whether it is still, moves, rises, or falls, water fills us. Imagine what stories and strange tales can be told from the depths of its depths.

TROUBLE THE WATERS: Tales from the Deep Blue will be a new anthology of water-themed speculative short stories that explore all kinds of water lore and deities, ancient and new as well as unimagined tales. We want stories with memorable, engaging characters, great and small, epic tales and quieter stories of personal and communal growth. Science fiction, fantasy, horror, interstitial, and unclassifiable works are welcome. We are seeking original stories in English (2500 – 7000 words; pays 6 cents per word) from writers of all walks of life from this beautiful planet and will accept some select reprints (pays 2 cents per word). Deadline: November 1, 2017. Projected publication: November 2018, Rosarium Publishing, www.rosariumpublishing.com. Please send submissions as a .doc, .docx, or .rtf file in standard mss formatting with your name, title, and word count to: TroubletheWaters2018@gmail.com

Please note that we are unable to accept simultaneous or multiple submissions. See here for more information.

hey single non-binary foc (frens of color)

We are not too much work. Being unable to categorize the gender of yr partner isn’t a problem it’s just a thing.

People who think marginalizations are ~problems~ tend to be people who want to do 0 emotional work in a relationship. They can fuck right off and are not worth your awesome self/selves.

If you can find other nb poc to hang out with, in person or online, awesome; we are good frens for one another. Can become great partners too, though for me the best part is willingness to have deep friendships.

Most importantly we normalize one another, we teach one another that we can be seen as full, real people important in our own right. We help one another raise our bars on how we’re willing to be treated.

love, an old married nb poc who wants to sit you all down n feed you ice cream or dietarily-ok equivalent n tell you you’re worth it.

Not to say that we need partners! being single can be just as awesome as being in couples n triads n fluid networks too

and it goes just as much for friendships & kinship, we’re not too much work there either, and it’s the people who say that who are trouble and wrong,, not us.

it’s just too many of us are lonely & we tend to think we’re too much work n i wanna hug you all <3

How I know a fanfic author is very young...

Fic: He was 30, signs of age setting in with the wrinkles around his eyes and mouth, bits of grey at his temple and in his beard.

Me, in my early 30s: *gives the camera a flat stare*

omg that’s precious

last time I got carded I was 38 i think, maybe 39, the last time i bought booze anyway

Hurricane Harvey and how to help

People outside of Texas don’t seem to be grasping the severity of Hurricane Harvey and the far-reaching, horrific damage it’s inflicted. This is a historic and catastrophic storm. Now considered one of the worst in US history.

In Corpus Christi, where Harvey was projected to make landfall, authorities told everyone that didn’t evacuate to write their names and social security numbers on their arms to identify their bodies should first responders have to recover them. Instead, Harvey touched down in Rockport and all but leveled it to the ground. The winds were 150mph. One storm chaser caught it live. Rockport has sustained some of the worst damage reporters have seen.

As I type this, the rain and wind is so fierce it sounds like a woman screaming. I live roughly twenty minutes from the Nasa Space Station. In the early hours of Sunday, this area was at the very worst of the storm. The rain was pounding down for nine hours and the thunder and lightning were nonstop. Quite a bit of my town is flooded, but not as badly as surrounding ones. My Walmart had three feet of water and the nearest high school was underwater. My cousin received over 70 tornado warnings just yesterday.

Much of Houston is or was underwater. Homes are flooded to their roofs. People are fleeing to their attics as the water keeps rising and being warned they should only do so if they have an axe to break out. My brother’s girlfriend had to be evacuated from the second story of a home on Thursday. People were standing in knee to chest-deep water with their babies, their elderly, their pets. Hoping for rescue to come.

Harvey has been downgraded to a tropical storm, but the rain is still coming. People are still losing their homes, their livelihoods, and possibly their lives. What’s so lethal about this storm has been how it has stalled over Houston, moving at a dead crawl of only 1mph while dumping up to possibly 50 inches before this is over. Houston’s annual rainfall is 50 inches. We’re getting that in only a matter of days. And it’s not over. It’s still raining. People are afraid to go to sleep, only to wake up with their homes flooded. So far, at least 14 people have been reported as dead. A strong current took a family of six trying to escape floodwaters.

The National Weather Service has characterized the rainfall as “unprecedented” and “beyond anything experienced.” It’s broken the national record for most extreme rainfall in the US mainland. One meteorologist estimated we’ve seen a trillion gallons of water in Harris County in four days – enough water to run Niagara Falls for 15 days. Before it’s over, Harvey might deliver 20 trillion gallons of rain, which, for comparison, would be like “the biggest waterfall at Niagara Falls, Horseshoe Falls, pouring across Texas for about nine months.”

I know people are wondering why people are still here and were reckless enough to stay. Houston’s mayor didn’t issue a mandatory evacuation because there was no time to evacuate. Within almost a day, Harvey was upgraded from a tropical storm to a hurricane to then a category four. The traffic would have been disastrous and more people would have died as a result. It was an impossible situation and continues to be. Even if I wanted to evacuate, I would be afraid of getting stranded in water trying to find a route to leave. Many roads are or were impassible.

The one consolation in this storm has been the outpouring of charity and selflessness. Texans, specifically Houstonians, have banded together to help each other, to save lives, and make the best of this awful situation. People are using their boats, kayaks, even dump trucks to rescue others. Every hour more boats go into the water. Thousands are in shelters right now and more mega shelters are being opened.

This is, very simply, a catastrophe.

Thankfully, Harvey seems to be moving northeast, although that could spell disaster for Louisiana as well. But as the storm subsides, Houston is going to be left devastated to pick up the pieces. Many people will have to rebuild their entire lives.

If you want or are able to help:

Most charities prefer monetary donations. These are more flexible and cause less of a strain on the charity, allowing them to help more, USAID explained. "Unlike material donations, cash involves no transportation costs, shipping delays, or customs fees. It also enables relief organizations to spend more time providing aid by spending less time managing goods.”

If you are unable to help, please share. Thank you.

Lackington’s Issue 15 is out! I’ve got a STORY in this one, rather than an illustration ( - and the artwork for my story is lovely, btw). Fantasy Mycenaeans, faux Homeric language & fun with chiasmus.

gently reblogging myself because i’m terrible at self promotion; please enjoy this 2k word exercise in pedantic ring composition
