These two parallel scenes, with the same van and the same halt and the same spot, are more important than we all let out, and I feel like they’re more important than any other scene in Story For Steven.

They represent Greg’s choice to stay, not necessarily for Rose, but for Beach City.

The first scene is dark and isolated, Greg is alone with Marty and Marty is insulting him. He doesn’t use Greg’s name and he uses ‘kid’ as an insult to him. Marty doesn’t care about Greg and he represents the choice Greg didn’t take, the one to be a rock star under a phony management, chasing thrills and not making any connections, not because that’s what Greg wanted, but because Marty did. Marty didn’t see people as people. he saw them as commodity, opportunity, and this is what he wanted Greg to choose.

But Greg didn’t choose that, he chose Rose and Beach City, and while financially it might not worked out best, it was definitely the right choice for Greg. The scene isn’t dark anymore even though it’s nighttime (yeah the light is from an alien threat, but still, it’s symbolic) and instead of being alone with Marty to look at him, he’s not alone. First of all he’s with Steven, the result of his relationship with Rose, the representation of his choice, and secondly there’re many people, his friends, looking out for him this time, instead of one person glaring at him. Mr. Fryman doesn’t talk down to Greg either, he uses his name, and shows that he cares. He uses ‘kid’ as a concern for Steven, and not as a way to look down on the Universes.

These 2 minutes worth of scenes in both episodes are what Story for Steven is about for me, not about Greg’s relationship with Rose. As sweet as it be, that relationship is yet to be explored beyond its beginning.
