Katniss smiled against Gale’s lips after he spoke of his love for her. While it wasn’t the first time he told her, the two of them weren’t very vocal about their relationship. Partially because it had been kept a secret for obvious reasons, but also because they had just never needed to say things to each other. The other just always knew. So when they did say ‘I love you,’ it was much more meaningful. She pulled back from the kiss for just a moment to respond, saying that she loved him too, before going back to kissing him.

The Mockingjay continued the kiss until she needed to breathe. Upon pulling back, she also pulled away from him, managing to sleep away from the way he had her pinned against the wall. She flashed him a teasing smirk before reaching down to remove her shoes. After placing them in the corner she glanced around the room as she undid her hair. Effie had styled it into a simple up-do, but she wanted to take all of the pins out while she had the chance. Once they were all out and placed on the dresser, Katniss ran her fingers through her hair, the raven colored hair smoothing out in slightly wavy curls.

When her wedding ring shined in the light it caught her attention. She had no idea how, but Gale had managed to get them matching wedding bands, and a small engagement ring for her. They hadn’t been engaged long, but the fact that she had one was proof enough that he really did love her. That he just wasn’t marrying her because of them going to war. He wanted to, and their rings were a promise of that. The sound of Gale’s boots being tossed carelessly to the floor snapped her out of her thoughts. She whirled around, finding him starting to get more comfortable as well. Shortly after his boots his jacket followed.

Katniss had been so focused on their wedding that she hadn’t even given much thought to their actual wedding night. Her cheeks heated up at the thought. While this wouldn’t be the first time they’d slept together, it was only their second. After finding out about the Quell, the two had spent an entire day together in the woods away from their family. One thing had led to another, and they’d slept together just in case she didn’t make it back. But that felt like it had happened an entire lifetime ago, and she wasn’t sure if she’d ever not be uncomfortable without the security of wearing her usual outfit topped off with her father’s hunting jacket.

She drew in a deep breath, and held it for a moment before letting it go and stepping towards him. For someone whose hands were steady and calm with an arrow, she couldn’t believe that her hands were actually shaking as she reached up to undo the top button of his shirt. Katniss took her time, somewhat because of the unsteadiness of her hands, but also because she didn’t want to rush things. Once the last button was undone she reached up and pushed the shirt off his shoulders, letting it join the other clothing items on the ground of their new living quarters. Katniss locked eyes with him for just a moment before leaning forward and pressing a kiss to the spot right above his heart, her lips lingering for a little longer than necessary.

“Katniss Hawthorne has a nice sound to it,” she murmured against his skin.

Gale couldn’t resist watching her as she slipped away from his embrace and undid her hair, letting the dark curls cascade down to her shoulders. She was radiant, and he couldn’t tear his eyes away. Their relationship had been his saving grace over the last year, and he was hoping it had been the same for her because god knew she’d been through so much more than he had. But now they were safe from Snow,and so were their families, and he’d just stolen her away from their wedding.She was his wife, and he didn’t think he’d ever get over the novelty of being married to the girl he’d fallen in love with in the woods. The girl who’d proven, time and time again, that she was stronger than anyone had ever given her credit for… starting when she was twelve years old and managed to ensure the survival of her family after her father’s death in the mines. She didn’t deserve to have to prove herself anymore, though; she didn’t deserve to hurt any longer. She deserved happiness, and Gale was hopeful that her brighter future was starting right now.

He finally turned away when he caught her admiring her wedding ring, smiling to himself. He’d saved up and gotten her engagement ring back in Twelve, not long after the Quell announcement. It was simple, because he hadn’t been able to afford anything more, but it really was beautiful. And it was more Katniss than anything fancier or more extravagant ever could’ve been;he hadn’t need to wonder if it was right, because he knew his hunting partner as well as he knew himself, or as well as she knew him. It wasn’t really to propose to her; it was, of course, eventually,but things were so complicated. She was supposed to be engaged to Peeta, and she was heading back into the area. He couldn’t let himself be a distraction.It was more of a promise, though- to himself, and to her, even if she didn’t know it. That one day, things would be different. They wouldn’t need to hide.And the wedding bangs, purchased a few weeks later after she’d headed off on a train back to the Capitol, was the same kind of thing. He couldn’t guarantee she’d be coming home, but the rings in his pocket were comforting. A reassurance. They’d see each other again, soon.

He’d had them in his pocket when the bombs started falling, which was how they’d survived. He and the rest of the people who had managed to escape the flames had spent three days in the woods before Thirteen rescued them, and those three days had been so long and torturous. They’d had no way of knowing what had just happened in the arena, or if Katniss was alive. For all they knew, for all he knew, she was dead. The Capitol could have killed her, just like it had thousands of people who’d had the misfortune of calling Twelve home. But the rings had kept him hopeful, and then he’d finally been able to give them to her. She’d accepted his proposal, they’d planned the wedding, and things were better than they’d been in a long time. He shrugged his jacket off and kicked off his shoes, utterly content.

They met in the center of the room again, and her fingers began unbuttoning his shirt. She worked intently, and finally she slid the fabric over his shoulders and off of his arms. She kissed his chest, and one of his arms wound around her so she could slide the zipper of her dress down.

“I’ve got to agree with you there,” he said, the smirk on his face evident in his voice, before he placed a kiss on the top of her head.It still felt like a dream, the fact that she was actually his wife. He didn’t know what he’d done to deserve her, but he was so thankful.

They’d done it. They’d gotten married. Katniss and Gale had entered into a relationship post-Games, and she’d had to play along with Peeta and the Capitol about their love story. After all, it had been about survival. Although she cared for Peeta, she just didn’t care for him in the same way. After being rescued from the Quarter Quell, she’d been reunited with Gale, and it had only taken him the time until she was out of the hospital to propose. At first she hadn’t been sure what her answer was. They were still so young and they were going to war. But after everything she’d been through, and with what they were about to face, how could she say no? The wedding had been quickly put together. Effie had taken care of her simple dress and finding something for Gale. In fact, Effie made sure to help Katniss with her hair, and had insisted on doing her makeup. They’d been married in 13 surrounded by the trees and grass she liked visiting so much. Her family was there. Some friends. Allies. In a mere fifteen minutes, she’d emerged from her room as Katniss Everdeen and turned into Katniss Hawthorne.

Immediately following the wedding a reception started in the same grassy area. Food and drinks were near the edges of the green, and music played so people could dance. It was a nice distraction for everyone, and it made Katniss happy that for once everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. She’d been pulled away from Gale by Prim, and partway through the two of them dancing together she’d removed her vail and placed it on her sister’s head, grinning while doing so. Once the dance was over, she spent a bit of time with her mom, Haymitch, and a few others before she felt a pair of strong arms wrapping around her waist from behind. Smiling to herself, she allowed Gale to pull her away and back towards the center of the grass for a dance. Katniss happily let him lead. She’d never been much of a dancer, but not dancing at her own wedding wouldn’t be acceptable. Even she knew that. And dancing with him seemed so effortless.

They’d stayed a bit longer at the reception after their dance. The rest of the time Katniss stayed glued to Gale’s side except for a brief dance with Finnick. She definitely wasn’t going to say no to him. It was when the reception was really in full swing and they were no longer the center of attention when Gale grabbed her hand and began pulling her away. An eyebrow arched, she followed anyway, quickly hurrying to keep up with him. When they rounded the corner towards the living quarters she immediately knew where they were going. Her skin flushed at the thought. Now that they were married they’d been assigned a new private room. All of their things had been moved and unpacked while at their wedding, so when Gale opened the door and led her inside, they were greeted with their new home.

Before Katniss could even comment on how quickly 13 moved, Gale pressed her against the wall, and she found herself wrapping her arms around his neck in response. Without any space left between them, she leaned up, just in time to meet him in their first real kiss as a married couple. The one at the wedding had sealed their vows, but this was different.

They’d been dating for over a year, but nobody knew. Katniss was supposed to be madly in love with Peeta, as per Snow's orders, and there was no telling what he’d do to them both, or their families, if Panem found out she wasn’t. So out of necessity, they’d kept their relationship a secret from everyone. Their mothers and siblings had their suspicions, especially considering the fact that she’d gone home covered in coal dust the first time they’d kissed… but the less they knew, the better. Snow had already made it obvious that he was well aware of what was going on between them, but if they managed to keep it under wraps, and the rebellion died down, then maybe if a few years….

The prospect of a rebellion excited him, of course, but the targets Snow had on the backs of himself, Katniss, and everyone they’d ever cared about were all too real. He wasn’t a fan of playing it safe, especially when this was something he’d been dreaming of for years, but Snow was out for blood and the people he cared about, the people he needed to protect, were under his microscope. Gale didn’t know how he’d live with himself if he was the reason Snow hurt them. Hurt her. At this point… at this point, he couldn’t imagine a life without Katniss in it.

And then everything changed with the Quell. The rebels’ plan had worked, somewhat- it hadn’t been perfect, seeing as the Capitol had still gotten their hands on a few of the Victors. And Snow had bombed Twelve almost as soon as Katniss blew out the force field surrounding the arena, leaving less than a thousand survivors. But now they were safe- or as safe as you could be,with tensions between the districts heating up quickly. And so were their families, and the captured Victors; Gale had been a part of a successful rescue mission a few weeks ago. Snow could no longer get to them… and so they were getting married, because it was about time. They were still young, but if the country was going to war, it was better that they did this now. Just in case.

Their wedding was both small and simple, which was the way they both would’ve wanted it under normal circumstances. The reception was the same; a gathering of the people they loved, and who loved them. It was fun, and it was perfect. Even so, Gale wasn’t able to resist pulling his new wife away after an hour or two of dancing and leading her towards the new compartment they’d been assigned because they were now a married couple. Maybe a little too eagerly, but when he pressed her up against the wall of their room and kissed her just as intently as he’d let her through the halls a moment ago, he couldn’t find it in him to regret a thing.

Married. They were married. Despite all Snow had done to her, she was still able to find some form of happiness. With him. It made him so glad that was able to make her happy, because she deserved it. She’d been through hell and back, and she deserved it.

“I love you,” he backed away from their kiss long enough to say. God, did he.
