#i was talking recently about why x/g feel so married in s5 in a way they don’t before#like they’re both so so SO in love before there’s just a different level of intimacy you know?#and i remain convinced it’s all down to xena’s responses to gabrielle and the way she allows gabrielle to see things she wouldn’t before#the things that stick out always in my mind are xena in them bones them bones and god fearing child - specifically around the pregnancy#where xena is scared for herself or in pain and her first unfiltered reaction is to call for gabrielle#when before that have we seen xena allowing herself to show fear FOR HERSELF? not fear for gabrielle or others?#when have we seen xena admitting pain that’s so inextricably linked to that fear?#and this is another thing#we’ve seen xena cry before ofc - even in the presence of gabrielle#but for her to stand face to face with her and openly allow her to watch#for her to allow - even invite! - gabrielle’s touch as emotional comfort!#it’s just a whole nother level of intimacy xena just didn’t allow herself before#when she would allow gabrielle to touch her sure - but she was very restrained and tense about it in these moments#partially bc of how very much and how desperately she wanted gabrielle’s touch and comfort#such tiny moments! telling such a huge story with such emotional shifts!#BLESS THIS SHOW for centering this kind of journey#and for prioritizing subtlety and trusting its actors to do the amazing work they do (@tunemyart)
