I'm always going to be an stalwart defender of both high art and complete trash. I also personally think that the best way to really open yourself up to the highs of the former is to be open to the guiltless pleasures of the latter.

Vetted family fundraiser masterpost 1

Version date: May 2nd 2024.

This is a masterpost for the evacuation fundraisers I've vetted so far. The numbers next to the names have no significance beyond ease of navigation for me for when I check their progress in the future. You should look at the disclaimers instead and focus on those. Occasionally I will update these with new info, including new fundraisers, and the amount of cash that's been raised. Check in regularly on the original post when you see it being reblogged. In all likelihood once its reached you it's already outdated. This post is part of this masterpost series compiling fundraisers for Ghazzah and Sudan. I focus on Ghazzah as I am Palestinian and am more equipped to do verifications as I'm more familiar with my own country and its politics and dialect, but if I know a fundraiser for a Sudanese family is legit I will include it here.

listen. its 2:00 am and i have to talk about this. i think that, in horror, particularly in supernatural horror, the biggest, most scary, most dread inducing thing that can happen to a character is not, in fact, death. it is an unspecified, horrific dread fate that exists only in ambiguity. i like to call this fate Death 2. Death 2 is the scariest thing that can happen to a person. even if none of us can outline what it is, we’re all, for the most part, in agreement that it’s out there, and that we’re very afraid of it. nobody knows what it is, it will never be defined, but what is important is that a ghost, or a demon, or a guy who looks at you, what’s important is those things likely have the power to do it to you. the key, the absolute key to keeping supernatural horror effective is to never, ever eliminate the possibility of Death 2 as an outcome. the moment you reveal too much lore about your monster’s intentions or methods, whether it’s by establishing the rules of their haunting too clearly, or giving them the opportunity to clearly communicate their goals (through a seance or ouija board, for example), or merely by raising the curtain a little too much, you have eliminated Death 2. Now the worst that can happen to the characters gets established as being death, or possession, or pain, and that’s just never going to be as scary as whatever Death 2 is. If you wanted to watch a fun horror movie where the tension was in whether or not people were going to get killed, you could watch something like Alien, or Friday the 13th, or Us. If there’s ghosts or demons involved though, and that’s what ends up happening, it’s like, why did I bother coming here, I could have had way more fun watching a slasher romp if I wanted this kind of horror, because a slasher romp knows what it’s doing and how to use narrative tools to make “what if a guy was coming to kill me” an actually effective plot. you have to preserve ambiguity with ghost stories. with entity stories. you gotta. you have to preserve the possibility of Death 2.

A lot of the reblog are getting it wrong - this is not about making a specific and defined fate worse than death, or eternal pain or whatever, it’s about being vague enough to recreate the instinctual sense of SOMETHING horrible happening without knowing what it is. But the people saying that when you are a child you don’t fear the monster will kill you, but “get you”, really understand it. The young child or animal being chased by a predator probably doesn’t think to themselves about what exactly it means to die in an existential sense. Now understanding death brings its own horrors, plenty of people are afraid of death in its own right, and you definitely can make effective horror out of the idea of everything you were being erased and only a corpse being left. Not to mention the understanding of pain that would occur before death, which will not be tolerable simply because it’s temporary. But the flip side is that knowing exactly what happens allows you to rationalize it, understand what it is and what it is not, the limits to how horrible it can be and even the positive side of it. I feel like a lot of horror is about trying to emotionally revert the viewer back to the horrible uncertainty of childhood - incidentally, that’s why I think it’s such a common genre to use things designed to entertain children like kids’ shows, puppet mascots, clowns etc. as horror. People say it’s about subverting innocence but I’ve always thought it was more about connecting you to a time when things like watching a kids’ show actually were scary to you, putting you in front of things that give you an exaggerated fear response because you first saw them as a child when you could be scared more easily, and then pairing it with things that would actually justify fear in an adult for double the effect. Which is of course a bit double edged because if it wasn’t a specific thing you were familiar with as a kid that you associated with something that scared you then, it would just come off as silly, but if it works it really works.

I'm always seeing this sentiment of "I have got to make my art weirder" or people begging for weirder art but here's the thing, Weird is not a brand. You cannot rack your brains trying to figure out the "Weird" formula. You don't get weird art by artificially forcing whatever you think is "weird." You get weird art (and I think "weird" is sometimes people groping for a way of saying non-corporatized) by figuring out what you like, deep down, even (especially) if you think it's embarrassing and wallowing in it like a pig
