AHHH-MAZING costumes at tonight's peculiar costume ball in Atlanta!! (at Little Shop of Stories)
Carl Gross Autumn/Winter 2015
Luv this.
When I was a kid, my parents got me a pair of pet bunny rabbits. I had always wanted pet rabbits, and I was freaking stoked. They were kind of on the old side–my dad’s friend had gotten the rabbits for his kids, but the kids were mean to them and didn’t take care of them, so they were given to me instead. In my mind, owning pet rabbits was going to be the sweetest thing ever. They would hop around and cuddle me and eat carrots and nibble lettuce and nuzzle my fingers.
These rabbits were assholes. Looking back, it was because, duh, those other kids were abusive. But these rabbits bit and they would literally piss on you or anything nearby–and they had distance–and they mostly just sat around and pooped and hated me. tbf, they hated everyone, but I was the one who took care of them, and they hated me in particular because they saw me multiple times a day.
And it broke my little girl heart, because I’d wanted this happy bunny relationship so much and it ended up being this horrible nightmare.
Except sometimes, the bunnies would cuddle. I would never know why or when, but randomly they would come up to me and snuggle my hand and just accept that I was an okay human and those moments were bliss.
Anyway, writing is like that.

Had such a fun night at the Library of Souls event! Thanks @ransomriggs for having us!
SUCH an excellent event last night in Atlanta, co-hosted by my favorite booktubers!
Are you planning on visiting Philippines? You have a lot of fans here. Please come. Hahaha. Specifically in Palawan. Hahahaha. Love lots from your number 1 fan. Hahahaa :)
I love my PH fans (and so does Tahereh)! We came twice in the past 3 years -- and it’s a looooong trip! -- so I think it’ll be a while before we come back, though we would definitely like to some day. And Palawan is beautiful!!
A little essay I wrote about writing Miss Peregrine (the book, not the character), starting over, and happy accidents in fiction.
Just curious, did you have your autograph printed in all your Library of Souls books?
No, the ones that have my signature in them, I actually signed! (My hand still hurts!) : )
Thanks for your questions!
OK guys, I gotta sign off now, but thanks a million for all your Answer Time questions! I hope you had half as much fun as I did. Keep sending questions and I’ll answer them in days to come!
would you say there is a limit to how unconventional a storyline can go before it becomes //too// ridiculous? (your writing is my favourite + keep doing ur thing)
Not really, It all depends on your style and if you can pull it off. If you’ve ever read George Sunders, you’ll see that the story can get SUPER crazy but still be brilliant and have a lot of important things to say about modern life.
Whats your favorite fruit?
Longan, which I discovered while in Hawaii. A delicate, aromatic sweetness. So good.
Do you have any special writing routines? A special chair? A certain drink? Music? The low buzz of a leaf blower in the distance? Only in the am or pm?
Did you have Jacob's last line of the 2nd book planned out ahead of time or was it spontaneously written? It's fantastic. And peculiar! (See what I did there?)
Thank you! dialogue and scene-work is always spontaneous and comes to me as I’m writing. In fact, I often find myself silently acting out the roles of the various characters in the scene -- gesturing and making facial expressions and such -- which is why I can’t write in coffee shops. I’d be arrested.
So, I know you've taken John Green to a haunted hospital once before. Are there similar experiences you'd like to share?
I’ve explored lots of abandoned places! In fact, I went on a whole expedition to find them when I was making the book trailer for Miss Peregrine (and made a film about it!)
As a Welsh person I'm just wondering, why did you choose to set the orphanage in Wales? I mean, it's Wales. Probably hardly anybody outside the UK could point out Wales on a map. Thanks!
It felt like a magical place to me! And one that, besides the Arthurian legends, didn’t already have a ton of fantasy literature attached to it. (Harry Potter lives in Scotland, for instance, so that was taken.)
Would you consider writing the Tales of the Peculiar? I'd love to read mores stories from this book!
Those peculiar folktales were some of the most fun parts of Hollow City to write, and I’d actually love to write a whole book of them. Not sure when I’ll have time, but maybe one day!
